Once a Runner
Once a Runner: A Novel | John L. Parker

Once a Runner captures the essence of what it means to be a competitive runner; to devote your entire existence to a single-minded pursuit of excellence. It has become one of the most beloved sports novels ever written. Originally self-published in 1978 and sold at road races out of the trunk of the author's car, the book eventually found its way into the hands of high school, college, and postgraduate athletes all over the country. Reading it became a rite of passage on many teams, and tattered copies were handed down like sacred texts from generation to generation. It ranked as the number one most sought-after out-of-print book in the United States in 2007. Once a Runner is the story of Quenton Cassidy, a collegiate runner at fictional Southeastern University whose lifelong dream is to run a four-minute mile. He is less than a second away when the political and cultural turmoil of the Vietnam War era intrudes into the staid recesses of his school's athletic department. After he becomes involved in an athletes' protest, Cassidy is suspended from his track team. Under the tutelage of his friend and mentor, Bruce Denton, a graduate student and former Olympic gold medalist, Cassidy gives up his scholarship, his girlfriend, and possibly his future to withdraw to a monastic retreat in the countryside and begin training for the race of his life: a head-to-head match with the greatest miler in history. This book is a rare insider's account of the incredibly intense lives of elite distance runners; an inspiring, funny, and spot-on tale of one man's quest to become a champion.

obviateit @Eggs my husband is a runner. He just completed his first half marathon this past summer! I‘ve never been a fan of running, myself, even when I was healthy enough. 😅 4y

A tribute to Dad - Part 1

This was the TV room when I was a kid and now it is my dad's den. His shelves are organized thusly:

Left shelves - Canoeing, fishing, running
Right shelves - History, historical fiction, alternate history

And are you ready for this, Littens? Not a single one is TBR. He's read every single one. Many multiple times. And he's always happy to read whatever weirdness I have on hand. I am a reader because he's a reader.

Rachbb3 Looks cozy! 8y

You don't get it unless you're a runner, but if you get it, this may be the truest thing you know, too. Happy Global Running Day to all of my fellow runner readers!

Audrey Are you running philly? Here's to your perfect running weather for a great run. Plus philly has so many places to eat post race. 8y
JessReads @Audrey Yes! Philly does have a bunch of great places to eat, so I'm looking forward to that! Unfortunately, as far as weather goes, we're looking at low 40s (good) and 40 mph winds (not so good haha) 8y
Audrey Here's to a constant tailwind!💨 8y

"He grooved his mind upon the thin platinum rail of his task, a line that stretched out in front of him and disappeared into the gloom, further than he could contemplate all at once." I think "the thin platinum rail" is the best imagery I have ever read about running. Gold medal for that one, Parker.

"Running to him was real; the way he did it the realest thing he knew. It was all joy and woe, hard as a diamond; it made him weary beyond comprehension. But it also made him free." A classic line from this novel about a college athlete whose dream is to break the 4-minute mile. I must have placed this ephemera in the book--these are the pro results of a race I ran during the period I was reading this book. (I was back in the pack).

Pickpick

I read this years ago. I found that while it is a poor novel (in general), it might in fact be the best novel about running (which isn't saying much about the sub genre). However, the passages bout running, training, and breaking through personal limits are truly gorgeous, and written by someone who has firsthand experience. Here's the review I wrote years ago: http://thesecondpass.com/?p=1360 Also worth noting, this book is a cult classic.

LauraBeth I need to read this - thanks for posting about it! 8y
Runamyswim I've always liked that book, the scene when he does that crazy interval workout and then coach says "now go do it again" destroyed me. 8y
Tav @Runamyswim I like when they are running with the horses 8y

My husband and I met at Rogue Brewery, he was reading Once A Runner and I was reading Howl. After a rocky start (he told me he vehemently hates the state I'm from😬), he wooed me with his enthusiasm for this book about running. Once a Runner captures what it's like to be dedicated to your sport and in general never give up on your goals. I'm not a #sportsbook fan but this one can inspire even the laziest of us!

451Degrees Such a cute way to meet him! Totally want to meet my husband while we both read books #dreamman #goals 8y
LauraBeth How does one vehemently hate a state? 😂 8y
Yournewfriendsams @kyvo21 I love our little story, but I should mention we gave each other totally wrong first impressions. I don't really like beer and he reads an average of one book a year 😆 8y

Not my favorite running book but it was fun nonetheless. There's a sparseness to it that made the story that much more believable.

Tav What *is* your favorite running book? 8y
LibraryLily @Tav I have not but I am now going to gladly add it to my tbr! 8y
Tav I also love this one about the NYC Marathon -- 8y
