Hey guys,

As part of my tutoring business I am starting up a "reluctant readers" book club which will look at a book a month and their film/tv adaptations. I'm looking for books for the next 3 months appropriate for the above age groups. For October I'm feeling "horror-y" but I'm open to any and all suggestions! I'd especially love books that touch on themes my kids will really be able to engage with.

Thanks!

AbigailJaneBlog To clarify: these don't have to be novels! I'm happy with non-fic, poetry, comics/GN's 2y
dylanisreading For horror-y middle grade, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz (a classic) paired with the 2019 adaptation of the same name, which is good. There's also the Goosebumps books and their TV adaptation. 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @dylanisreading that's amazing, thank you! I really don't do horror so I'm a little out of the loop 😅 2y

dylanisreading @AbigailJaneBlog No problem! For horror for your group 2, I'd recommend There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins and its Netflix adaptation (though, disclaimer, I haven't watched the movie yet 🤣). I'll let you know if any other horror pairings occur to me. 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @dylanisreading yes that one came up in my research, thank you! 2y
WJCintron I would love to be a part of it. I LOVE reading books with film adaptations since I‘m also a screenwriter & filmmaker. Keep me posted! 😃🙌 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @WJCintron this was for my tutees, but I would definitely be up for hosting something like this. I know there is a #NovelWatchingCrew somewhere around here! 2y
WJCintron @AbigailJaneBlog Cool! 😃 If you ever do, let me know. 👍😊 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @WJCintron will do 🌟 2y

This is my adorable step daughter. I‘m looking for a book to give her for Christmas. She‘s in 3rd grade & struggling a bit with reading. She likes the My Little Pony books, Disney TV shows like Jesse, drawing, and collecting rocks. Says she wants to be a Baker Veterinarian when she grows up. Any ideas Littens? Bonus points if it‘s an #ownvoices book.

Tamra The Bad Kitty series! 😼 They last thru the years. 4y
Tamra Either the picture books or the chapter books , both are terrific! 4y
emtobiasz @Tamra picked a good one! There‘s also an #ownvoices chapter book series with the first book all about rocks: 4y

Tamra @emtobiasz yes to those too! 4y
Tamra Also this is an early chapter book series that my daughter has enjoyed. Bonus points for character of color! 4y
Amandajoy @Tamra @emtobiasz those look fantastic! Thank you! 4y
Gissy Follow @LibrarianRyan she has amazing children books recommendations. Right now she posted many new coming releases. 4y
LibrarianRyan For a Holiday read I suggest When Santa Fell to earth. It's adorable.

For the others: Liberty Porter First daughter, the Yasmin books, the Lulu series by McKay.

there is also Dyamonde Daniel books, Ellray Jakes, the sugar plum ballerinas, and Kenya Ford.

Some of these are below grade level, but since she is struggling, the easier ones might be less intimidating.

Need more suggestions just ask. This is just off the top.
