This was great. The story was great (actually very tragic, but I was so invested). The characters were great. Bahni Turpin is my new favourite audiobook narrator.

Bkwrm7 Bahni Turpin is amazing. I have loved everything I've listened to that she has narrated. 1mo

I expected a lot from this book - great cover & synopsis looked intriguing, however it was merely okay. I didn‘t connect with any of the characters & I think you need to in order to feel a sense of urgency & menace. 3⭐️

TW: Murders were quite gruesome, some sexual scenes, swearing.

I finished this on audio earlier this week, and cruised thru the story rather quickly, but it didn't leave an impression. It's only been a few days & I'm struggling to remember the details. It's very much a slasher with no character development. I cringed when people were murdered but more because of the gory details, not because I cared. It was also jarring to mostly follow the MC, but change perspectives to the victims during attacks.

I heard about this book on Litsy and thought it sounded fantastic. Just the kind of book I love. Three chapters in and I‘m feeling a bit meh.

I finished the book. It got better as it went on. The deaths were more interesting. The big reveal of Makani‘s secret was a let down. Makani was a scapegoat. The older girls were more to blame. The ending was a little crazy. I find it hard to believe that the killer was so difficult to subdue.

LibrarianRyan I agree. Her secret was just so hooo hummm. And the beginning was so Scream that it was boring. Overall I liked the book, but I didn‘t love it. 4mo

3.5* If you are a fan of Scream, you are going to like this book. It was a bloody mess from beginning to end and bloody fun as well. It‘s the right mix of horror, mystery, and teen mush to keep a reader flipping pages to finish in a day. This would work well as a teen horror movie, or to make the next season of the Scream TV show. The deaths are gruesome, and the author does a bang up (pun intended) job of describing the grizzly crimes. A fun read that was totally unexpected from a YA romance writer.

This was the book version of the movie "Scream". A slasher book about high school students terrorized by a killer. My only gripe is the author didn't have character development of most victims. However, for an author that is known for romance this is not a bad horror read.
Overall Score 3.0/5.0

#24b4monday day 1 wrap up:
Finished 1 book, the tagged book
Got in over 100 pages of blood of Olympus
I'm really happy with how many hours I got in.
I enjoyed the tagged book. It nwas somewhere between 3 to 4 stars

Andrew65 The time you got to is brilliant 🙌, the tagged book not so much! 11mo
Allydanielle88 @Andrew65 thank you. Yeah the book wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't the worst. It was okay. It was just an easy read to listen to while I did work around the house. The build up was exciting but the reveals were a let down. It was reminiscent of 90's slashers that I think I appreciated. (edited) 11mo

A friend saw that I was reading this on Goodreads & commented “trash.” 😅 Now, having read it, I feel the need to defend it. His main complaint was that it‘s not scary & that it‘s basically the book equivalent of a B-horror movie. I mean...YEAH. 🤷‍♀️ But a “B” is a grade of 80%, at worst. That‘s not so bad! It‘s cheesy & campy - just like a B horror movie. But it‘s also way more progressive & evolved than any run-of-the mill flick.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/2: The characters are diverse, in terms of race & gender identity. They‘re also complex & self-aware. The football star, gamer, & stoner - all minor characters - each overcome giant personality flaws & consistently strive to be better people (though it‘s often one step forward & two steps back). The message seems to be, “Hey, teenagers are still trying to figure it out. We all are. But them especially so. Don‘t rip ‘em a new one.” 🔪 (edited) 14mo
monalyisha 2/2: Note: It‘s HEAVY on the romance. But let‘s be honest: that‘s why we read Stephanie Perkins. Isn‘t it? (edited) 14mo
Kappadeemom I enjoyed it too! I thought it was campy and wonderful. 14mo
See All 12 Comments
monalyisha @Kappadeemom I loved when Darby used a decorative “spooky” skeleton as a weapon. I thought it was just the right balance of silly & homage. 👌🏻 14mo
LisaJo I have not read this book. But, I never think of B-movie as bad. A B-movie is enjoyment. And that is partly why I read, just enjoyment. So as they say, “you say that like it‘s a bad thing.” 14mo
CoffeeNBooks It's on my TBR list, but your review just made me want to read it sooner than later! 14mo
monalyisha 3/3: I will say that the killer disfigured his victims in a particular way that reminded me of “Every Heart a Doorway,” but it wasn‘t nearly as artful. Given the tone of each book, I guess that makes sense. “Every Heart” is very hip & contrived (weirdly not a criticism; I dug it); the pattern in this one is more punny/random, which matches the killer, but isn‘t as smart. 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 14mo
MaleficentBookDragon You had me at B movie. Stacked. 14mo
Ashley_Nicoletto I really enjoyed this one as well! B horror movie is a great description. 🤣 I dislike when others label books as trash. Just because it‘s not for them doesn‘t mean it‘s not for someone. 14mo
monalyisha @Ashley_Nicoletto He‘s one of my best friends but he‘s a total book snob. 😆 He spent a long time reading mostly Hawthorne & Melville & now he teaches 8th grade English. To his credit, he‘s really trying to get on their level. And there‘s a fair amount of YA he‘s been pleasantly surprised about. I think he‘s just ABSOLUTELY not Stephanie Perkins‘ audience, lol. 14mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @monalyisha LOL. I get it. We all have one. I will give him credit for trying. 🤣 I know an avid reader who eventually quit asking me what I was reading after multiple story lines contained magic, vampires, or witches. 🤣🤣 It‘s not her jam and every time I said something along those lines I could see her struggle to pretend interest. 🤣 14mo
batsy I'm all about the B-horror and the cheesy and the campy and the silly fun and this is why I still miss Pretty Little Liars 😂 So keen to read this when the mood demands it 👍🏽 14mo
