Meet Scarlett, a smart, sarcastic fifteen-year-old, ready to take on crime in her hometown. When Scarlett agrees to investigate a local boy's suicide, she figures she's in for an easy case and a quick buck. But it doesn't take long for suicide to start looking a lot like murder. As Scarlett finds herself deep in a world of cults, curses, and the seemingly supernatural, she discovers that her own family secrets may have more to do with the situation than she thinks...and that cracking the case could lead to solving her father's murder. Jennifer Latham delivers a compelling story and a character to remember in this one-of-a-kind debut novel.

Day 19 of #adventrecommends is thanks to #freakyfriday & @Laughterhp - this isn't a book that I'd have picked up on my own. @emilyrose_x

Toddler passed out early, and I finally got to finish up this fun YA mystery (in the bath with booze😱). While it's fully stand alone, I love Scarlett as a PI & would happily hang out with her more. This case provides insight into her family but there's a lot more to unpack with her and all the supporting characters. I didn't anticipate the mystical magical bits ✨ TW youth suicide and dog heartache 🙈 #mommyreads #ya #crime #woc #muslimamericans

I liked this book featuring Scarlett, an urban, Muslim, teen detective. I liked her Jewish love interest, too (Deck -- what a hunk!). I thought it was cool that the author used elements from comparative religion to tie in a supernatural storyline. I like that it manages to be both spiritual & feminist.

It's like Veronica Mars + Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but more diverse (& not quite as witty). I'd read more of these, were it to become a series.

readinginthedark Sounds interesting! 7y
monalyisha @readinginthedark Yeah! It wasn't AMAZING - but I enjoyed it. The mystery isn't the strongest aspect. It's one of those things that if she were to keep writing them, I think they'd get better & better (so I hope she does)! 7y

"I left the Rubicon alone, even though Deck had offered to go with me. Insisted, even. But I turned him down. Needing him was one thing. Needing him to protect me was another."

The comparisons to Veronica Mars are apt, although the mystery didn't really grab me all that much - there wasn't as much depth to it as I would have liked. That being said, I do hope this is the beginning of a series as I would absolutely read the next one.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I felt the same! I think I would have liked it more without the paranormal stuff... it's been awhile since I read it - but I'd give a sequel a go (if there ever is one) 7y
mischa @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Agree. But, since there had to be paranormal stuff, I would have liked more. It is almost as though she was hedging her bets and so didn't really commit to either scenario. 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @mischa, yeah! Full commitment! Is there any word on a follow up? This one is a couple of years old? 7y

mischa @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I've not really looked, to be honest! 🙃 7y
monalyisha @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @mischa I just finished this (and liked it quite a bit)! I agree that the mystery wasn't super-compelling, but I actually think it's kinda cool that you never get confirmation about the supernatural stuff. I looked at it as a statement about belief: Scarlett doesn't really know (and neither does the reader). *Who* can *really* know? You know? 😉 7y
mischa @monalyisha @girlwiththelibrarybag Oh, I totally didn't mind the supernatural stuff, I just would have liked more of it given that it was there. I like the idea that no one really knows, that absolutely goes with the entire book and is a great way of looking at it. I guess what bothered me was that none of it went deep enough, regardless of Scarlett or the reader truly knowing. 7y
