Ophelia
Ophelia | Lisa Klein
21 posts | 31 read | 20 to read
In this reimagining of Shakespeare's tragedy, Ophelia must choose between her love for Hamlet and her own life. In a surprising twist, she devises a plan to escape from Elsinore forever . . . with one very dangerous secret. Sharp and literary, dark and romantic, this dramatic story holds readers in its grip until the final, heartrending scene.

A day late in posting this, read it for the book/movie challenge for #readingrush. I saw the movie a week ago, & remembered there was a book it was based off it. It was a slight re-read, as I read it when it first came out 11 years ago, but forgot it. The writing is amazing, very true to the Shakespearean language. While it didn‘t get the best reviews in 2008, I think it would be more appreciated in 2019 as it gives voice to a silenced woman.

I love twisted classics, and this retelling of Hamlet was satisfying. It skews a bit religious toward the end, but it worked well as a plot device and of course fit well with #gettheetoanunnery.

Ultimately, this was a very ambitious piece of writing, and I think that the author did it a lot of justice.Ophelia is a very strong and feminist character - she defends women and their actions, which is a very stark contrast to Shakespeare‘s misogynistic portrayal of women. It‘s almost the complete reversal - all men are the gender to be wary of - with except for two male characters. #ya #youngadult #retelling #historicalfiction #hamlet

My Saturday Night Read. Slowly working through my cache from this year's book sales. I'm excited for this one because I love Shakespeare adaptations.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I want to do a Shakespeare month next April (the month of his birth). Originals and adaptations only. Looking forward to hearing what you think of this! 7y
SusanPogo @BarbaraTheBibliophage So far so good! I love adaptations. I took a class in college specifically about Shakespeare adaptations--it's amazing how many contemporary book and film plots we owe to him. Remind me in April--I'll read along! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Let's discuss the reading options before then too. I was focusing on the recent adaptations, but it might be interesting to add a few others to the list. 7y
