It highlights the remarkable journey of Ethel Payne, an African American journalist who dedicated her career to seeking truth, justice, and equality. As the sole black female journalist in the White House, Ethel broke barriers by asking tough questions of presidents and other officials.

Ethel asked the questions and demanded the answers for people whose paths were paved with dreams.

I like this book because it taught me about another important and influential African American woman from history that I did not know before.

Biography about Ethel L. Payne. She began as a young journalist who loved to write. Her teacher and mother encouraged her to write. She wrote and fought against racism and injustice. She worked on a US military base in Tokyo, Japan. She wrote about the experiences of black soldiers. Eventually she was writing at the White House.

The Power of Her Pen by Lesa Cline-Ransome and illustrated by John Parra was published on January 14th, 2020. The genre is Biography and won the Carter G. Woodson award. Ethel followed stories from her school newspaper in Chicago to Japan during World War ll. It even led her to the White House briefing room, where she broke barriers as one of the first black journalists and earned the title “First Lady of the Black Press. “

It is the story of the groundbreaking black female journalist Ethel L. Payne. It is the story of her struggles and how she persevered. The book also has a list of future reads about other female historical figures. It is an empowering story for young girls!

This book puts a spotlight on a historical black figure who does not get talked about nearly enough. Before reading this book I had never heard the name Ethel L. Payne but she is a exceptional role model for all females. She went into a field that was dominated by white males and got people to listen to her. This book tells her story in an interesting way with illustrations that draw you in and portray the story beautifully!

This book was published in 2020 and has won the Best Childrens Book of the Year. It has so many amazing illustrations and teaches a lot about what African Americans went through to earn basic rights.

I thought about how much work was put into just allowing African Americans simple rights and it put a lot of things into perspective for me.

This book does an excellent job of retelling the story of Ethel L. Payne. It is informative but written in a way that is easy to understand.

The Power of Her Pen, 2020, was nominated for the Carter G. Woodson award in 2021. This picture book does an excellent job of retelling the story of Ethel L. Payne. The text gives the reader a deep understanding of how important Ethel L. Payne was, while also giving insight into her dedication to bringing news to the black community and making the general population aware of issues in the black community that were being ignored.

A biography of the first black journalist in the White House Press. Such an admirable person. Such a necessary read.

I love all these picture book biographies and that more than well known people are being chosen. I no nothing about this person and I am looking forward to finding out more.
