Fludd
Fludd: A Novel | Hilary Mantel
One dark and stormy night in 1956, a stranger named Fludd mysteriously turns up in the dismal village of Fetherhoughton. He is the curate sent by the bishop to assist Father Angwin-or is he? In the most unlikely of places, a superstitious town that understands little of romance or sentimentality, where bad blood between neighbors is ancient and impenetrable, miracles begin to bloom. No matter how copiously Father Angwin drinks while he confesses his broken faith, the level of the bottle does not drop. Although Fludd does not appear to be eating, the food on his plate disappears. Fludd becomes lover, gravedigger, and savior, transforming his dull office into a golden regency of decision, unashamed sensation, and unprecedented action. Knitting together the miraculous and the mundane, the dreadful and the ludicrous, Fludd is a tale of alchemy and transformation told with astonishing art, insight, humor, and wit.

I am sure there will be some book by Hilary Mantel I don't enjoy, but I have not found it yet. I got the audiobook of this little gem from librofm and I highly recommend it. The ending is not fully resolved with a bow but still satisfying whichis hard to accomplish.
The picture shows why I have not been reading for the last couple of weeks while back home with beautiful weather.

This was a strange, immensely original and surprisingly sweet book about faith and transfiguration. I loved the setting, all the characters, and obviously Fludd himself. Very gently magical, very English, Hilary Mantel is really incredible.

Nuns and priests in a village Up North in the 50s. "His Corpulence" the bishop informs Father Angwin that he must modernise. Enter the curate, Fludd. But what manner of man of the cloth is as well-versed in alchemy as scripture? The ensuing transformations might be welcome (not least Fr Angwin's inexhaustible whisky bottle) but are they holy?

I enjoyed this very much: the mundane and marvellous are the width of bible paper apart. And it's funny!

TrishB I‘ve got the same for 99p! 4y
Cathythoughts Sounds great. I have it stacked already... not on a deal over here 😕 4y

Book 4 of my #12booksofsummer challenge was a strange story of faith and transformation. Wonderfully atmospheric and darkly funny, as you‘d expect from Hilary Mantel. Quite unlike anything else I‘ll read during this challenge.

Throwback pic to when I finished this book in Malibu by the pool. I wish I was there now! So hot in NYC.

This book was a little weird and hard to get into at the beginning, but overall I enjoyed it.

It's amazing how much thought and feeling is packed into this short novel. Fludd tells of a small Northern Catholic village, it's congregation more than half profane, its priest fending off an officious bishop, a cruel Mother Superior and his own lapsed faith. Enter Fludd, the mysterious new curate, and his curious ability to draw the truth out of people. Very funny and very sad Mantel deftly mixes the earthy and the ethereal 👇

Moray_Reads and while she leaves many questions unanswered the sense of uncertainty is a perfect end in itself. My first five-star read of 2018 6y

I wish I could sum up these 181 pages as well as the reviewers on the back cover but I cannot. I was smiling all the way through- it is delightful and moving and hopeful and ambiguous and just a perfect little gem. 👍👍👍👍👍#TbrList #HilaryMantelStarterBook

DrexEdit 💜 Hilary. I'm reading my way through her other books (slowly) while waiting for the third installment of the Cromwell story. 😊 this goes on the old #TBR. 7y
Booksnchill @Drexedit it is a delightful quick read- I shall pick my next Mantel- what do you suggest? 7y
DrexEdit @Booksnchill I recently finished An Experiment in Love. It's very good, but kind of bleak. I also have Beyond Black around here somewhere but I haven't cracked it yet. 7y

What a funny, strange, unsettling book.

Have you ever read something that made you feel discontented and unsettled at the end?

This book is scathing about a form of Catholicism in 1950s England. I am a person of faith and this doesn't bother me, as the things it ridicules are ridiculous.

But something about the story, though mostly beautifully written, left a bad aftertaste.

Have you experienced such a feeling about a book before?

@Libby1 , your post reminded me of the Round Church I visited in Vermont several weeks ago. This was built in the 1800's. I wish I had a shot of the inside. Families purchased their pew which was inside a wooden box. They brought tiny heaters filled with coal to stay warm inside their compartment. It was still quite cold, as you can imagine. #Vermont

Libby1 This is fantastic, @Suet624 ! 7y
Libby1 Where is this church located in Vermont? I have another American friend living in Ireland who is from Vermont. 7y
Suet624 It's in Richmond, Vermont. Would your friend like a visitor? 😁 I really want to go to Ireland again soon. @libby1 (edited) 7y
