A peculiar Peril by Jeff VanderMeer is 656 pages long. Which scared me at first. Longer books haven‘t really agreed well with me recently. But I‘ve put of reading this book for too long! So I‘m really excited to start this book today.
After reading a few book reviews on goodreads this book gives me a mix of Lemony Snicket‘s Series of Unfortunate Events and Ransom Riggs Peculiar Children vibes…and I‘m so excited for that!
I picked up this book thinking it was just my type of weird... so far so good 😊
As I suspected, having finished this book, I‘m still not entirely sure what I just read. 🤪 BUT, I can tell you it was a wild, fantastical, imaginative, over the top extravaganza of a story—a wildly imaginative tale about a house filled with antiques & 3 special doors that lead who knows where, the boy who inherits it, & the friends, villains, talking animals & vegetables, magicians, & more who shape what happens next. Odd, quirky, & unusual.
I mean, it‘s says it right there on the back of the book! This is definitely one of the oddest books I‘ve read in a long time. Odd and quirky and weird and filled with imaginative writing AND I‘m almost certain when I reach the end, I‘ll close the book and ask myself what I just read. All of which is to say, this book may not be for everyone but so far I‘m enjoying it.
“It‘s like a getaway and a safe house got married and had a creepy child.”
I have to admit, I‘d be interested in seeing EXACTLY what this looks like... 🏚
I know this isn't a particularly popular book and I do agree it's very weird but I loved it!
I've been waiting for the long weekend to tackle my BIG books and this is the BIGGEST of them so hopefully I love it.
Celebrating the start of the holiday weekend in the best way possible-hibachi and a book! 📚💕😋Happy Friday night, litsy family! #bookndinner
This book is kooky and mysterious and just so much FUN! 😀💕📚 I've only just started it, but I'm loving it so far!
I didn‘t love Vandermeers ya attempt. It felt mocking but also silly. The world was fun but the characters were more like caricatures.
Next up, VanderMeer‘s latest. It‘s YA (a departure for VanderMeer). Maybe his first? Regardless, it‘s the first VanderMeer book I‘ve read and just a few chapters in, I can say it is a wild ride which is sure to delight readers of all ages.
Got some bookmail yesterday and I am dying to get to it but it's still a few books away on my tbr.
VanderMeer is an autobuy for me. I'm a big fan. I'm extra excited to get to this one as I have absolutely no idea what it's about. I've avoided all spoilers and haven't even read the synopsis. All I know is that it may or may not be a YA story. That's it. 🤷♂️
Sometimes it's fun going in completely blind.
🙈🙉🙊
I‘m going to give this one a shot, but I think I‘ll end up bailing.
#TBRTuesday Working down my ARC shelves. Of course, it would help if I‘d stop requesting new ones. 🥴
Eeeeeeeeeeee! It‘s Jeff VanderMeer‘s first YA novel! It‘s out July 7 and it is an enormous tome. It‘s over 600 pages long! I am so excited to start reading it. 🦋🐍🌸
