Black Girl Unlimited
Black Girl Unlimited: The Remarkable Story of a Teenage Wizard | Echo Brown
"Just brilliant."Kirkus Reviews Heavily autobiographical and infused with magical realism, Black Girl Unlimited fearlessly explores the intersections of poverty, sexual violence, depression, racism, and sexismall through the arc of a transcendent coming-of-age story for fans of Renee Watson's Piecing Me Together and Ibi Zoboi's American Street. Echo Brown is a wizard from the East Side, where apartments are small and parents suffer addictions to the white rocks. Yet there is magic . . . everywhere. New portals begin to open when Echo transfers to the rich school on the West Side, and an insightful teacher becomes a pivotal mentor. Each day, Echo travels between two worlds, leaving her brothers, her friends, and a piece of herself behind on the East Side. There are dangers to leaving behind the place that made you. Echo soon realizes there is pain flowing through everyone around her, and a black veil of depression threatens to undo everything shes worked for. Christy Ottaviano Books

Full of strength & heart, with stylistic similarities to Elizabeth Acevedo. Brown‘s semi-autobiographical narrative, about rising from poverty & trauma (with whimsy intact & keen intersectional insight), is at its most effective when she weaves her voice in with the speeches of other characters, alternating fluidly between perspectives & timelines. The choice to write in the first-person, present-tense, however, was not my favorite & it felt long.

monalyisha TW: Rape, sexual abuse, domestic abuse, drug abuse, & more. Very heavy. Very sad. And also hopeful. (edited) 4y
monalyisha I think this would be a great choice for a Book Club! I‘m scouring reviews trying to see what other people thought of it, & how their views might match up with or clash with my own. There‘s A LOT to work through. (edited) 4y

A semi autobiographical book with magical realism. While it dealt with tough topics like drug abuse, domestic violence, and rape I enjoyed the book.

MartinaLove Seems like a difficult read. 4y
LaurenMags @MartinaLove it is definitely a heavy story. The book is just under 300 pages and it took my a little over a week to read. Typically I could read that many pages in a few days. 4y

I'm torn. I loved many aspects of this, but really struggled with the magical realism. Not many authors do it well. It felt a little all over the place. Still, there are some beautiful, powerful parts.

YA fiction that is very autobiographical. I listened to the audiobook which is read by the author and she does a good job. There are several instances where two scenes are happening in parallel and the switching back and forth was hard to follow when listening.

Heartbreaking at times but hopeful and full of wisdom.

I don‘t have the words....💔❤️

You‘ll root for Echo Brown (character) and thank Echo Brown (author) for this amazing coming of age story. Have your Kleenex handy while reading.

*triggers for poverty, sexual violence, drug use, racism, sexism, and depression

Something told me to pick this one off the shelf yesterday and I‘m so glad it did. I don‘t think I‘ve ever read anything like it and as triggering as this was for me in many areas, I couldn‘t put it down. I don‘t know if I have all the words in me to say how I appreciative I am to have read this and how seen I felt, but this is now my favorite read of the year so far. 😌

And the wizarding lessons sprinkled throughout? I REALLY needed those!!

SW-T I just started this one! Only a few pages in, but liking it so far. 4y

I‘m trying to expand my reading outside of solely fiction, and this one caught my eye not just from the beautiful cover, but the combination of autobiography and magical realism.

In all of the rereads I‘ve done of the Harry Potter series, I‘ve always wondered what it‘d be like to have a story focused on a black wizard - now it looks like I might finally get that answer!
