Our French Algerian main character describes the events in her teen years growing up alongside her family‘s hotel on the French Riviera. Sagesse (a beautiful first name) is a devil-may-care teenager, who along with her loud annoying friends, trigger the hotel‘s owner—her grandfather—to confront them with his rifle. While describing the aftermath of that event, Sagesse recounts the history of each family member. The most poignant story involves ⬇️

I really enjoyed this book, which was a snapshot of the life of a teenage boy in a small Midlands village in England in the early 1980s. Jason Taylor is a great character who struggles with managing bullying in his school and the breakdown of his parents' marriage with the self obsession of a teenager and brilliant humour. Some scenes will stay with me for a while and the funfair scenes and small town feel felt a lot like somewhere wicked....

Buddy reading tonight. Isn‘t my buddy the cutest? ♥️🐈⬛

A soft pick. A coming-of-age story set in a small village in Ireland in the early 90s. Lucy is in high school, falling desperately in love with her girlfriend Susannah, and struggling to deny her sexuality and pursue the life expected of her. It is intense and full of angst, totally capturing the obsessive nature of those tumultuous teenage feelings. We see Lucy unable to embrace her authentic self and the toll it takes as she tries to fake it.

Still playing catch-up with #FoodandLit finishing October‘s Samoan read. This book was the first to be published in the United States by a Samoan woman. It‘s a coming of age story that catches the Samoan life and culture beautifully. I wish I knew there was a glossary of Samoan words in the back while I was reading as there are a lot of phrases and words not translated. Dinner, Samoan Chicken Moa Fa‘Asaina aver coconut rice.
