A Taste of Sage: A Novel | Yaffa S. Santos
15 posts | 15 read | 2 to read
From talented new writer, Yaffa S. Santos, comes this unforgettable, heartwarming, and hilarious rom-com about chefs, cooking, love, and self-discovery that is a cross between The Hating Game and Sweetbitter. Lumi Santana is a chef with the gift of synesthesiashe can perceive a persons emotions just by tasting their cooking. Despite being raised by a single mother who taught her that dreams and true love were silly fairy tales, she decides to take a chance and puts her heart and savings into opening a fusion restaurant in Inwood, Manhattan. The restaurant offers a mix of the Dominican cuisine she grew up with and other world cuisines that have been a source of culinary inspiration to her. When Lumis eclectic venture fails, she is forced to take a position as a sous chef at a staid, traditional French restaurant in midtown owned by Julien Dax, a celebrated chef known for his acid tongue as well as his brilliant smile. Lumi and Julien dont get along in the kitchen--to say Lumi is irritated by Juliens smug attitude is an understatement, and she secretly vows never to taste his cooking. Little does she know that her resolve doesnt stand a chance against Juliens culinary prowess. As Julien produces one delectable dish after another, each one tempting Lumi with its overwhelming aromas and gorgeous presentations, she can no longer resist and samples one of his creations. She isnt prepared for the feelings that follow as shes overcome with intense emotions. She begins to crave his cooking throughout the day, which throws a curveball in her plan to save up enough money and move on as soon as possible. Plus, theres also the matter of Esme, Juliens receptionist who seems to always be near and watching. As the attraction between Lumi and Julien simmers, Lumi experiences a tragedy that not only complicates her professional plans, but her love life as well... Clever, witty, and romantic, A Taste of Sage is sure to delight and entertain readers until the very last page.

A fun foodie romance about a chef who can taste emotions and goes by feel, who ends up working for a chef who is all about creating the same food. Definitely will make you hungry. Content note: One character gets pretty injured, though for those who like the sick/comfort trope, there is that.
For #RippedBodiceBingo can be used for food on cover, bath, workplace rivals.

First time in 15 years living in Canada I found book with my name in it! Is that a good reason to buy a book …. Don‘t know but I will give it a go.

4.25⭐️

Lumi has been following her dreams of owning her own restaurant and cooking her Dominican fusion food the way she wants. When finances get the better of her though, she is forced to close the doors on her place and take up a sous chef position at a very unoriginal French restaurant. What's worse is that her new boss is the same man that made fun of her cooking at a recent catering event. This can‘t possibly go well…

Lumi is a great character. She's ambitious, smart, & even a bit stubborn. I was genuinely interested in seeing her pursue her dreams. On the other hand, it was harder for me to understand her attraction to Julien. He seemed too arrogant, too set in his ways, & too dismissive of others to appeal to Lumi's sense of caring & creativity. For that reason, it was a struggle for me to be engaged until later in the book. Not a favorite, but fine.

Having an infant and going back to work means I'm a little behind! This book had a lot of promise but I feel like it tried to create conflict where there wasn't any, and introduced some other weird things. It was still a fun read! #Teamslaughter @Clwojick

Unfortunately, this light contemporary romance fell short for me. Love self-confident diverse characters, but the love connection happened based on physical attraction and nothing else on both sides. Not a convincing romance story. And, the element keeping them apart was also underdeveloped and then dropped abruptly.

Erinreadsthebooks So just guessing by the title, is one of the characters named Sage? 😩😣 4y
Well-ReadNeck @erinreads ha! Nope. Even weirder. The girl has magical taste buds and knew her former fiancée was cheating on her because of the bitter taste of food he prepared. The boy cooks for her and each thing has a taste of sage which, apparently means he loves her. ??‍♀️ 4y

I have started writing down my book purchases (too bad I can't remember which #Litten inspired this.) So far it hasn't stopped me from buying books. 🙄

FYI - I have started lists for July and August book purchases since I don't get charged for preorders until they ship. Hell yes that's cheating. 🤣

nanuska_153 I started to do the same this year because my bf complains that I buy too many books (doesn't matter the amount, that's not a thing) That's how I found out this weekend that regardless of how much I read my TBR pile is kept in a constant equilibrium. I've started the year with 30 books on my TBR pile; I also bought 19 books, read some of those and some of my TBR pile with the result that I still have 30 books on my TBR pile 🤷 5y
TheLibrarian I did this last year and continued doing it for 2020. It was very eye opening how much I spent on books and I‘m trying to scale back. 5y
Hooked_on_books I tried writing mine down to curb buying. It didn‘t work. Now, I‘m tracking how many of my unread physical books I‘ve read versus how many I have acquired and writing the numbers on a white board that‘s right in my face. It‘s working! I‘d like to be doing better at it than I am, but hey, progress. 5y

Sace @nanuska_153 Yeah. Sometimes it's the amount that bothers me, but mostly it's the number of physical books. I just don't have the space. So I buy e-books and it becomes a matter of not having enough time to read. My TBR pile will outlast me. My child is going to inherit a great library. 😂 5y
Sace @TheLibrarian Exactly. I think if I write it down, that will be the first step to getting my purchasing under control. 5y
Sace @Hooked_on_books OH! I'd love to see that. That is something I should do, too. 5y
TheLibrarian @Sace Good luck! I even keep track of where I purchased the book from, format, and if I ended up reading it the same year I bought it. My spreadsheet has another tab for books I acquired for free and another that is a summary for each month (total spent, how many purchased (by format), how many I received for free, and the total of all books acquired). 5y
Sace @TheLibrarian WOW! I think I'm a little too lazy and disorganized/inconsistent for that but damn I'm impressed! 5y
TheLibrarian @Sace Organizing and filling out/creating spreadsheets brings me a lot of joy 😄 5y
Sace @TheLibrarian To each his own 😁 My husband likes order too. I'm more like Pigpen. 5y

Maybe I‘m just in a mood. It doesn‘t help that halfway through the book, one of my biggest fears appeared when I‘d only been expecting light romance & not ... that.

Even so, this #ARC has a lot of continuity errors/timeline weirdness going on. Maybe they‘ll get straightened out pre-pub. As it stands, this book is fine - but just fine.

This book was a disappointment.

Pros: Driven, diverse characters who are comfortable in their own skin. The MC Lumi has a cool ability that is unexpected. She also has a killer support system. Every chapter ends with recipe(s) for the food mentioned during it.

Cons: Basically everything I didn't mention above. The second half is rushed and trope filled. The chemistry between the MCs is pretty forced. Overall it just didn't work.
