The Killings at Kingfisher Hill
The Killings at Kingfisher Hill: The New Hercule Poirot Mystery | Sophie Hannah
11 posts | 15 read | 7 to read
I was thrilled to see Poirot in such very, very good hands. Gillian Flynn, New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl The worlds most beloved detective, Hercule Poirotthe legendary star of Agatha Christies Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nilereturns in a delectably twisty mystery. Hercule Poirot is travelling by luxury passenger coach from London to the exclusive Kingfisher Hill estate. Richard Devonport has summoned him to prove that his fiance, Helen, is innocent of the murder of his brother, Frank. There is one strange condition attached to this request: Poirot must conceal his true reason for being there from the rest of the Devonport family. On the coach, a distressed woman leaps up, demanding to disembark. She insists that if she stays in her seat, she will be murdered. A seat-swap is arranged, and the rest of the journey passes without incident. But Poirot has a bad feeling about it, and his fears are later confirmed when a body is discovered in the Devonports' home with a note that refers to "the seat that you shouldnt have sat in." Could this new murder and the peculiar incident on the coach be clues to solving the mystery of who killed Frank Devonport? And can Poirot find the real murderer in time to save an innocent woman from the gallows?

This book is just ok. Inspector Catchpool, invented by Hannah, serves the same purpose as Christie‘s Hastings. Why not just use Hastings? Poirot is also mean to Catchpool. There‘s only one murder in this book that makes any sense, and there are too many characters. The narrator is really good though.

Although I do enjoy these new Poirot novels, nothing compares to the original Agatha Christie books.

Silver ring on the cover.
Been exhausted this week but in the holiday spirit. So not reading, but listening to this instead in stolen snatches- while resting, cooking, in the car. In keeping with the likes of Christie‘s Poirot, a cerebral read. Less action, more conversation.

The latest book in the Hercule Poirot series, which he is assisted by Inspector Edward Catchpole. It has all the usual ingredients, murders and a group of suspects. I enjoyed this one, I definitely had no idea of who the murdered was at all! #crimebooks

October marked the 100th anniversary of Agatha Christie‘s debut novel, ‘The Mysterious Affair at Styles‘, featuring a certain remarkable Belgian sleuth. I‘m planning a re-read of TMAAS before the end of the year to celebrate. I also hoped to get to this new Poirot mystery last month, but I didn‘t quite fit it in. Although no one can equal Christie, Hannah does a great job continuing on with Poirot - and this fourth novel sounds quite exciting!

Yeah. I‘d already borrowed this from the library before I read the previous one, which I didn‘t like and because I don‘t like to sent books back unread I read it anyway. Shouldn‘t have. I think I‘m going to stop with these now. They‘re clearly not for me.

This is the first of the new Agatha Christie‘s by Sophie Hannah that I‘ve had a chance to read, but I greatly enjoyed it! She‘s really done. Lovely job sticking to Christie‘s Poirot, but it doesn‘t feel stale. Now I‘ll need to go back and read the others!
