Glad I stayed with this book. Told in #DualTimeLines 1957 Japan & present day USA, we meet two young women, Naoko & Tori and the man who binds them by love and a secret. Fascinating piece of history too. Emotional. Wasn‘t a fan of the audio narration. #Booked2023

I loved this book! Did not know this particular part of Japanese/American history. Naoko falls in love with with an American sailor. Because of their differences in their cultures during the 1950s they are kept apart but surely the birth of a baby should make this boundary ok? 10,000 babies! Read the history notes at the end. Tear jerker alert!

😭 it's been a long time since a book made me cry. What a beautiful but heart wrenching story. For once I was happy with an ending, despite leaving the reader with some questions.

I joined a book group group on Facebook. Someone talked about this. I got it for 99p on kindle. I've now done this 6 times since joining 🤦‍♀️ I definitely suffer from book FOMO and clearly have no patience!!

Beautifully written sad story. Bad things wrapped up as tradition. Thought it was going to be a soppy love story at one point, but it definitely wasn‘t.
The ending was sad, but realistic.

Such a beautiful, beautiful book!! I can't believe I've only come across this book now. It's just perfect - from start to finish. So beautifully written. The ending totally broke my heart. I cried so much. ❤️❤️

A historical tearjerker. Set in late 50's Japan, seventeen year old Naoko falls in love with an American sailor but is forbidden to marry him due their xenophobic ideology. Sadly parting from him, Naoko finds herself pregnant and agrees to an arranged marriage. Cut to several decades later and the American's daughter Tori is searching for her father's lost love and discovers secrets that are highly restricted to traditions, honor and culture.

This was such a heartbreaking read! It was sad, yet beautifully written.
