Germany: Memories of a Nation | Neil MacGregor
8 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
"Germany is unlike any other country in the world. But how much do we really know about it, and how do its people understand themselves? In Germany: Memories of a Nation, Neil MacGregor -- director of the British Museum and author of A History of the World in 100 Objects -- presents the stories of a nation through a collection of thirty objects and touchstones. From coins and crowns to fairytales and philosophers, MacGregor presents the inventions, ideas, and icons that comprise the many identities of the German people. Germany: Memories of a Nation is a view of this complex and fascinating country like no other"--

Love a visual history book showing objects to illustrate history, I think it makes history really accessible. You can just dip into this book when you feel like it. The parts about the two world wars are covered very sensitivly and MacGregor emphasises how history has affected modern German politics and attitudes.

I‘m really enjoying this book right now, the ideas are cohesive around idea of national identity and memory using artefacts and ideas, and I‘m just learning a lot about German history 😊 #currentlyreading #nonfiction

My #backpackeurope trip is going really well, and I am enjoying myself immensly so far:) Luckily I remembered to send some postcards just before leaving Denmark! Now I'm off to visit some friends in #Germany, my stop number three for this trip. My company this time will be 'The Book Thief'. It has received so many praises that I am a bit worried the hype could potentially ruin it for me. Guess I'm about to find out 🤞🏻📚

mabell Cool collage! 6y
AAdamson That‘s a great collage. I use Pic Collage, but I can‘t figure out how to do all the fun things so many of you are doing. I can‘t figure out how to write words, or use a map that I can color in, or things like that. How do you guys do it? Hey 6y
hilded Thanks @mabell!:) 6y

hilded @AAdamson Thanks April!:) I normally just use the 'edit' function here at Litsy, although you have the same functions at 'Pic Collage' as well. I'm a bit lazy, so I find it convenient to just use Litsy. When adding your picture from Pic Collage here and get to the editing part, there is one button marked 'text', here you can add it on. There is also stickers etc. Hope this helps, I'm not so good at explaining these things 🙈 6y

Got this kindle in the mail today it's in German! Any idea how to change it to English ?

DuckOfDoom I have no idea what options there are but in you should look for 'Einstellungen' and there 'Sprache' which means language. I don't have a kindle ao I dont know what buttons you have to press for that 8y
wonga if you can find the settings (maybe under menu) there should be an option for personalize your Kindle and then a language option. Good luck! 8y
Skeebies05 Did you get this worked out? It is under settings and on my kindle its the 6th option down 8y

Larkken The settings icon is on the quick access bar third from the left and looks like a gear/circle with spokes coming off it. On the settings page, language options are next to a globe. 8y
JoeStalksBeck @Skeebies05 I did! Thank you! 8y
JoeStalksBeck @DuckOfDoom @wonga @larkken thanks! Got it figured out so now my daughter has her own kindle! 8y
Doresik But since it's in German, you have to drink a beer while changing the settings. 8y

Just finished Neil MacGregor's second run through history (which you can access free at BBC Radio 4). Germany - a country I love and loathe and which will always be my home, and which is, unlike it always strives to seem, much older and much more complex than the mere 25 years this nation counts. So many lessons it teaches... I very much recommend this podcast...

Heideschrampf ... to my country(wo)men on Litsy, who might (like me) sometimes need a reminder that this flag ?? literally symbolises "Unity and Justice and Freedom"- a motto that we should have taken to heart by now. We've already forgotten it once and humanity has payed the price. Now that the transcultural global community is polarizing itself it is our job to remind ourselves and the world that Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit is the only way forward ?❤️ 8y
Kathrin I haven't lived in Germany in over a decade, but I agree that I can feel the polarization when I am there. It worries me. 8y
