In this epic standalone fantasy, the acclaimed author of the Queens of Renthia series introduces an imaginative new world in which a pair of strong and determined women risk their lives battling injustice, corruption, and deadly enemies in their quest to become monster racing champions. Life, death, and rebirthin Becar, everyone knows that who you are in this life will determine what you are in your next life. The augurs can read your fate in your aura: hawk, heron, tortoise, jackal, human. Armed with that knowledge, you can change your destiny with the choices you make, both in this life and your next. But for the darkest individuals, there is no redemption: you come back as a kehok, a monster, and you will always be a kehok for the rest of time. Unless you can win the Races. As a professional trainer, Tamra was an elite kehok rider. Then a tragic accident on the track shattered her confidence, damaged her career, and left her nearly broke. Now Tamra needs the prize money to prevent the local temple from taking her daughter away from her, and that means she must once again find a winning kehok . . . and a rider willing to trust her. Raia is desperate to get away from her domineering family and cruel fianc. As a kehok rider, she could earn enough to buy her freedom. Impressed by the inexperienced young womans determination, Tamra hires Raia and pairs her with a strange new kehok with the potential to winif he can be tamed. But in this sport, if you forget youre riding on the back of a monster, you die. Tamra and Raia will work harder than they ever thought possible to win the deadly Becaran Racesand in the process, discover what makes this particular kehok so special.

I liked that this was a stand-alone fantasy novel. Granted, I felt like the ending was a little rushed, but that could just be me.

I liked Tamra a lot. She was a very interesting character and I loved seeing an MC have a child and it be such a great relationship. I had some trouble with Raia, she felt younger and more immature than 17 in my head. Most characters were interesting.

It was a bit predictable but I still enjoyed it start to end.

A fantasy romance with majority female cast that has like NO ROMANCE cause they're busy saving the damn kingdom while talking to a lion?!

Branwen I love this book so much! 5y

"I make my own destiny and determine my own worth. And I am worth quite a lot."

This book was amazing! For sure one of the best fantasy books I've read this year! Really cool and unique worldbuilding, impressive dialogue, and filled to the brim with strong female characters. I loved it! Plus, it's a standalone fantasy novel, which is rare for this genre. It was satisfying to see everything nicely wrapped up in one book. A must read! ???

"Does it truly benefit people to know what their soul will become? What does it matter? Shouldn't they just be good people because they love their family and they care about the people around them? People should be good because it's right, not because someone tells them it's what they should do."

YES! THIS! ???

"Sometimes being good, smart, and strong means being nice. But sometimes it doesn't. You be who you are, and don't let anyone change you in ways you don't want to change."

I am loving this awesome book SO MUCH! ???

Still a bit chilly today, but I still managed to take a nice walk. Aside from reading, walking in the park has really been helping to keep the anxiety in check! 📚💕

"I believe that fantasy is a literature of hope and empowerment. It can serve as a light in the darkness, as a guide toward strength, and as an escape from pain. It is my secret hope that someone will read this story and realize they can be who they want to be, that they can shape the world, that they can race the sands-and win."

This is from the acknowledgments section at the end of the book. So uplifting and beautiful! ??

Hufflepuffle That is utterly beautiful! 5y

I know it‘s only April but is it too early to say this is my favorite book of the year?

Monsters, races, conspiracies, intrigue at the court. What more can a reader ask for? This was an amazing fantasy stand-alone.

If this quarantine has been good for nothing else at least it has helped me make a good dent in the arcs I have from Goodreads Giveaways (since I can't be distracted by library books.) I am excited to finally be picking this up.

I hope everyone is staying safe & healthy. We can get through this!!
