In 1861 French silkworm merchant Herve Joncour travels to Japan. He strikes a business deal with a local baron there and is utterly bewitched by the man's concubine, a girl who does not have oriental eyes. An unlikely love blossoms between them, a love that is only strengthened over time. Subtle, tender and surprising, Silk is an entrancing tale of erotic possession and how the heart charts its own course. An international bestseller, Silk has been translated into twenty-seven languages and is the basis of an opera by Andre Previn and a major motion picture. Fall in love once again with this modern masterpiece in a beautiful new translation by Ann Goldstein. 'Deeply moving...A delicately crafted love story and an anatomy of desire.' Guardian

Picked this up somewhat randomly from an antique shop (not sure a publication date of 1993 is actually antique!), and found it rather beguiling.
I don't subscribe to the "show don't tell" rule (who makes up these rules, anyway?), and this is mostly told to the reader as if by an oral storyteller, with repetitions typical of traditional tales.
It's a story of travel, romance, exoticism & eroticism, told quietly, unaffectedly and with poignancy. 4?

This is a gorgeous novel. Slim and sexy, one of the best impulse buys I‘ve ever made at a used bookstore. Highly recommend!✨

Quick re-read. Still like this story about a man who travels to Japan to buy silkworms a lot. And the language too.

1. I'm not very good at craft 😅 I did decoupage when I was younger
2. It was a relaxing day and I'm happy for that. Lately I'm always worried for something, so I enjoyed a little break

I would like to tag, but I can't do it 😫

#GratefulReads - Under 250 Pages: Sometimes you forget a book. It hangs out in the back of a bookshelf or underneath a stack of much larger books or at the bottom of a bag of books until something (a photo prompt) sends you in its direction. When you pick it up you say softly, ‘Oh, I remember you. You were a quiet little novel with blushing lyrical prose told on 1-2 page length chapters. I thought you were beautiful & I vowed never to forget you!‘

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 💗💗💗awwww!!! 5y

Nute @BookNAround So happy to read your comment, because I never hear a lot about this book. I think that it is such an incredibly beautiful story and it deserves a wider readership. Obviously you‘re doing your part to spread the word.🤗 I think that I will do a similar thing - suggesting it in whatever reading platforms I find myself a part of!🙂 5y

What a wonderfully lyrical little novel! A very short but adventurous love story set in the midst of the Japanese-European silk trade of the 19th century. Written in single-page-long chapters with an unexpected twist at the end!

⭐⭐⭐⭐

In trasparenza, le ombre dei minuscoli uccelli parlavano con voce sfocata. Dicevano qualcosa di assolutamente insignificante o capace di scardinare una vita.

This 90 page international best seller is an historical novel about the silk trade in 19th C Japan & France, but is also an adventure novel & a love story & a fable & a prose poem. After deep thought I connected repeated scenes of rain with repeated travel itineraries. And it was awesome. It's that kind of book. I'm sure I missed much of it. Some readers will feel fireworks & others will feel but a few wondrous "poofs". It's my "Ratatouille" book.
