I think #FurrowedMiddlebrow brought this to my attention and I just loved it -- more than D.E. Stevenson's similar “Mrs. Tim,“ books, to be honest. Narrator Henrietta would be a huge hit on Twitter.

Earlier this week I did a blog post about books that are on my shelf that I haven't read and couldn't remember why they were there. One of those books was this one. I started reading it today and it is an utter delight so far!

This book was a delightful read laced with typical British humour and pearls of wisdom doled out in a subtle manner. The day-to-day struggles of people living in a village in Devonshire are chronicled in a balanced manner. The reader is given a glimpse of the privations suffered by the British people during the Second World War. This is a book that needs to be cherished and enjoyed. After reading it, I felt such a warm feeling bubble up within me.

#maybookflowers #war One on my TBR list, because of how similar it sounds in tone and theme (village life during the war) to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I was sold when the blurb mentioned Lady B, "who writes to Hitler every night to tell him precisely what she thinks of him".

The book is a series of letters from a middle aged housewife to her childhood friend who is fighting in Europe during WWII. Henrietta is a weak woman and would make even the mildest feminist cringe with her helplessness. Thankfully, the book was short so I just kept calm and carried on.
