Jonathan Swift (1667 1745) A famous Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer, poet and cleric. Swift is mostly remembered for Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal, A Journal to Stella and other works. His deadpan, ironic writing style has led to such satire being subsequently termed "Swiftian". Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships, commonly known as Gulliver's Travels (1726, amended 1735), is a prose satire both on human nature and the "travellers' tales" literary subgenre of the day. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature.

(1726) I had read excerpts in high school and college but never the whole thing. There's more necromancy than I expected, and a lot more scatological humor. I also laughed more than you'd expect for a political satire 300 years old. I much appreciated the footnotes in the Norton Critical Edition, which fill in some of the context and identify some of Swift's targets.

Graywacke Cool! I‘ve thought about trying this. I‘ve never read any of it. 10mo

Book haul 3 Vintage picks. Hunchback 1960's still has library pocket. Kari the Elephant is 1929 and just caught my eye. Gullivers Travels 1954 illustrated. I love vintage books. I imagine sharing the joy with someone 50 or more years ago.

Had to reach in the recesses of my reading history as I‘m not much of an adventure reader typically. This felt like a perfect archetypal example though for #tarottakeover

What a surprise! I really did not expect this to be so enjoyable! It's so much fun how Swift/Gulliver portrays the English society through travels to other strange places. And no, the English men are not in his favours 😂

Interesting story. Very well written but I would think the main character would have learned his lesson before the end of the book
