The Last American Man
The Last American Man | Elizabeth Gilbert
14 posts | 10 read | 24 to read
At the age of seventeen, Eustace Conway ditched the comforts of his suburban existence to escape to the wild. Away from the crushing disapproval of his father, he lived alone in a teepee in the mountains. Everything he needed he built, grew or killed. He made his clothes from deer he killed and skinned before using their sinew as sewing thread. But he didn't stop there. In the years that followed, he stopped at nothing in pursuit of bigger, bolder challenges. He travelled the Mississippi in a handmade wooden canoe; he walked the two-thousand-mile Appalachian Trail; he hiked across the German Alps in trainers; he scaled cliffs in New Zealand. One Christmas, he finished dinner with his family and promptly upped and left - to ride his horse across America. From South Carolina to the Pacific, with his little brother in tow, they dodged cars on the highways, ate road kill and slept on the hard ground. Now, more than twenty years on, Eustace is still in the mountains, residing in a thousand-acre forest where he teaches survival skills and attempts to instil in people a deeper appreciation of nature. But over time he has had to reconcile his ambitious dreams with the sobering realities of modernity. Told with Elizabeth Gilbert's trademark wit and spirit, this is a fascinating, intimate portrait of an endlessly complicated man: a visionary, a narcissist, a brilliant but flawed modern hero. The Last American Man is an unforgettable adventure story of an irrepressible life lived to the extreme. The Last American Man is a New York Times Notable Book and National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m off to a great start to my Nonfiction November! I love Elizabeth Gilbert, and if you‘re someone who has only ever given a whirl to (or heard of) her “Eat, Pray, Love,” you are missing out. (In 2014, I shoved her historical fiction novel “The Signature of All Things” into the hands of at least four people I love, and I regret nothing.)A well-done biography of a difficult man, this one would make for quality book club discussion, I bet.

I bought this book at a beautiful shop, Two Buttons, located in Frenchtown, New Jersey, owned by Elizabeth Gilbert and her then husband. It featured antique home items, art, and furniture that they had imported from exotic locales. There were also signed copies of her books! #curiouscovers #man #day13

Monday‘s op shop purchases. I love bath bombs lately, probably just as much as I love second hand Thermomix cookbooks. If you don‘t own a Thermomix you should and then you will want two like I do.

Forgot to post this last week — these were my last two print books of 2019. The Agatha Christie is The Mysterious Affair at Styles (the first one featuring Poirot).

I finished 2019 by just barely hitting my goal number of books read (finished my last book around 9:30pm on New Year‘s Eve!) In 2020, I‘m scaling my goals back just a bit so I‘m putting less pressure on myself in the last few months of the year.

#AyupAugust When Eustace Conway was 12 he went #downinthewoods alone , empty handed , built a shack and survived just fine for a week. When he was 17 , he left home for the wilderness for good. On my #TBRmountain for years .Written by Elizabeth Gilbert before her Eat,Pray,Love fame. He may have eaten some squirrels,sorry @squirrelbrain

Just started reading this yesterday — it‘s Elizabeth Gilbert‘s portrait of Eustace Conway, a twentieth-century survivalist and conservationist.

At seventeen years old, Conway left home to live on his own in the woods, and has been championing the natural world ever since. Very absorbing so far!

Interesting, but the subject of the book is a bit extreme. I don't think he would ever be able to live in normal society......not that he wants to.

Interesting biography about Eustace Conway, a man trying to live and share how to with and off the land. Impressed with his tenacity, and that he perseveres, this was a great glimpse into his life.

American man, not boy, but Eustace Conway was 17 when he left the suburbs to live in the wild. True story. This is a signed copy that I bought at Elizabeth Gilbert and her then husband's shop Two Buttons. #lyricalapril #americanboy

What an outstanding read...SO well-written, often funny, fascinating story in a compelling narrative. Couldn't put it down. I'll be thinking about Eustace Conway for a long time to come.

DivineDiana I have this in my TBR pile. Signed by Elizabeth Gilbert. I actually bought it at her lovely store in Frenchtown, NJ. 8y
