Das Lächeln der Fortuna
Das Lächeln der Fortuna: Erweiterte Ausgabe | Rebecca Gable
13 posts | 13 read | 2 to read

Bailedbailed

Bailed because I didn‘t continue with my German reading, not because it was bad!

I did and finally finished my doorstopper novel. I really enjoyed it, but I need to refresh my British history to get a better grip on it. I felt that the author took sides and sometimes her characters felt a little flat, a little too black and white.

I am still fighting my way through this doorstopper. I really like the story, and I only have about 200 pages left, but still...I could have read a lot more books this year, had I chosen something smaller. Oh well...And did I mention there are four more novels in this series, equally long 🤔🤔

We're in it for life, me and this book!
And what a brilliant word, Genugtuung! I first mistook it for a Neanderthal style interjection.

julesG 😂 8y
haanim What does it mean? 8y
haanim I ask because here we speak Afrikaans and we have a word "genigtug" which is an expression like "good grief!" 8y

I've hardly read anything this week. Today I've picked nettles and made soup from them, finished my taxes, and then I settled down on the sofa to read, got a Walter in my face instead.

LeahBergen Walter is the cutest. 8y
JoeStalksBeck Awww adorable. â¤ï¸ And the puppy is cute too 😉 8y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I need more info on this nettles âž¡ï¸soup! â¤ï¸ Walter!! 8y
tricours The recipe I used was super simple! Gather 2L of nettles (the early spring ones, the top 4 inches of the plant), rinse them and remove stalks. Boil in 5dl of water for 5min, then chop them finely. Keep the water. Combine 1 tbsp butter with 3tbsp flour in a pot, add 5dl of some sort of broth, boil a bit and add the nettle water, then 1dl of cream and the nettles. Done! And you can be way more fancy with herbs, onions, sherry, lemon, etc. 8y

I'll admit I did not know this was a 1200 page book when I started it. I thought it was 600 or so, but got suspicious when the percentage NEVER CHANGED. I've removed it now. Too demoralizing. The book is good though, not at all difficult to read! #languagelearning #german

julesG Fully understandable! 8y
Sarah83 maybe you'll give it a try, when you have read some other German books before 😉 8y
tricours @sarah83 oh I'm going to finish this one, no problem! 8y

We're supposed to get snow this weekend, so I'm getting what sun I can. (It was also supposed to rain right now, so there's always the hope that the forecast is just drunk.)

SheReadsAndWrites Our forecast has had a few too many as well... enjoy! ðŸ˜Žâ˜€ï¸ 8y
Suet624 I love the idea that the forecast is drunk. It sure seems like that a lot 8y
Sarah83 Snow? at this time? 8y
tricours @Sarah83 it would probably only last for like half a day before melting away! 8y
Sarah83 But I don't expect it 🤔 8y

I'm the most alert in the mornings, so that's when I now try to read my next German book. #languagelearning

Sarah83 You take this 'little' book next? 😉 Press thumbs you like it more than the one I recommended to you. ✊ 8y
julesG I went to a reading of this book once, and did not get my copy signed because "I was too posh ro queue". ;))) 8y
tricours @sarah83 it will most likely take me ages to read! @julesG is the author a snob? (I presume you like the books though?) 8y
See All 6 Comments
julesG I liked the books alright. Read them at a time when I studied English history, so some artistic freedom made me bristle. No, she's not a snob - I just saw the huge queue of groveling admirers and decided, I don't need my books signed. ;) 8y
tricours @julesG oh, I see 😀 8y
Sarah83 But your German will get better and better 😉 8y
