A Good Family
A Good Family: A Novel | A.H. Kim
8 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
A story of money, family, who you can trust, and the extremes to which one will go for blood. I couldnt put it down. Lisa Ling, host of CNNs This Is Life Keep your family close and your enemies closer. Beth is the darling of God Halsa, a pharmaceutical giant, and shes got the outrageous salary and lifestyle to prove it. Until she lands in white-collar womens prison, thanks to a high-profile whistleblower suit. Sam, Beths husband, used to be the towns most eligible bachelor, and hes never had to do anything for himself. Until his wife goes to jail, and hes left to raise two daughters on his own. Lise, the au pair, is the whistleblower. But is she? Everyone knows shes not clever enough to have done it alone. Hannah, Sams sister, is devoted to her family. Theres nothing she wouldnt do for them. Eva, Beths sister, is the smart one. (Read: not the pretty one.) Her life seems perfect on the surface, but sibling rivalry runs deep. Martin, Beths brother, is the firstborn, the former golden boy turned inside-the Beltway businessman. But what is he hiding? Someone knows something. Someone betrayed Beth. This is the story of the Min-Lindstroms. This is the story of the all-American family as it implodes under the weight of secrets, lies and the unchecked desire for wealth and power. A.H. Kim is an immigrant, graduate of Harvard College and Berkeley Law, lawyer, and mother of two sons. She lives in San Francisco with her husband. A Good Family is her first novel.

I usually enjoy books where most or all of the characters are bad people - but this one was just ok for me. It was an easy and quick read and the writing flowed well as the author took us through two point of views. The court disposition chapters didn't feel like they added much value to the story. The twist was decent but it just felt like most of the book was mediocre. Still glad I read it though since it was a pretty quick read.

The sun is starting to go down on another scorching day here. Going to try and finish the tagged book while enjoying a cold drink on the deck.

A beautiful evening to sit in the backyard with a good book. Reading while listening to nature and sipping on a lemonade after the kids are in bed. Should be a nice, relaxing evening.

I figured out the “twists” in this book and found it hard to like any of the characters. It‘s not one I will recommend to others but it was a fast read that I didn‘t feel I lost too much time finishing. On to the next!

It‘s rare that I enjoy a book so much when I can‘t stand any of the characters. They are truly appalling. Told from two points of view, with present and past events, interspersed with court transcripts, it follows a family dealing with a serious white collar crime jail sentence for misleading off-label pharmaceutical marketing. It‘s greed, selfishness, blind love of family. There is a lot of brand name dropping. A fun read, for sure.

A Good Family is AH Kim's debut novel. It is a family drama that kept me captivated.

The author deftly weaves the dual POV, and the present with the flashbacks. There's Hannah, who will do what she needs to do to help her brother, especially now that his wife is in prison, and he needs to raise their two daughters himself. Then there's Beth, Hannah's sister-in-law, who won't she sacrifice to get a head.
