Mehso-so

The Sound of Waves is a lovely romance from Japanese legend Yukio Mishima. It takes place on a small rural island whose lives and scenery are dominated by the fish trade. The setting is lovingly rendered is sparse detail. However, this is a romance written by a man in the 50s. Descriptions of women range from passable to cringe-worthy, and there are monstrous crimes attempted which are treated as momentary lapses in character. (TW, SA)

Prompt: Gnomeo and Juliet

PageShifter You should never judge by a cover but here the cover of the movie looks so much more appealing 😅 3y

#wondrousWednesday last week.
🌊I lived in 3 different places as a child and 10 more places as a young adult and adult.
🌊I live the here and now so I will make this place as my favorite one. I hope I don‘t have to move again.
🌊first, a quiet place, alone, a view point just to shutdown myself. Soft music, candle scents, the beach early in the morning or late in the afternoon because I love the sound of waves. Read books, run, paddle boarding

Sound of waves is a simple story written extremely well. It portrays the life of an introverted fisherman. However towards the end , I felt it was dragged too much! ⭐⭐⭐/5

A coming of age story—a poor fisherman falls in love with a beautiful daughter of a wealthy villager. Atmospheric and a wonderful lens on the lives and livelihoods of this remote island, this is beautifully written. Good and strength win in the end—and this was start to finish, lovely. 4/5

This was a very original, unusual love story that was unlike anything I‘d read before. I definitely want to read more Mishima but I think it would suit being read physically better than being an audiobook, I don‘t think I‘ll listen to Mishima again.

Electricity blackout at my town after a day of rain. There‘s something magical about candlelight compared to the clinical soulless white light from a phone‘s flash.

I recently read this lovely little book by the prolific Mishima. Look at all the different covers I found for the book!

Set on an island, a quaint fishing village in Japan, this is a simple love story. Hardworking boy meets daughter of a wealthy man, both fall in love. Obstacle-the girl‘s father. There‘s lovely & lyrical descriptions of the island‘s scenery & ocean. I like immersing myself in the daily lives of the islanders; fishermen, women pearl divers, the youth & womenfolk. Also the traditional culture of the Japanese & the island life. A good, laidback read.

Reading my first Mishima. Liking it so far, and also the cute illustrations on the beginning page of each chapter.

TiredLibrarian I read tagged book years ago and found it so depressing, but in hindsight I think I was just too young to "get" the book. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm @TiredLibrarian Oh, I have that on my TBR. This one I‘m reading is more of a coming-of-age/first love story 🙂 6y

I guess I have a pearl theme going on today, lol. I really loved this book! A lyrical masterpiece set within a community of pearl divers/fishermen on a small Japanese island. This is a kind of coming of age story while also poetically describing the exuberance of nature and young love.
