The Orphan of Cemetery Hill
The Orphan of Cemetery Hill | Hester Fox
9 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
The dead won't bother you if you don't give them permission. Boston, 1844. Tabby has a peculiar gift: she can communicate with the recently departed. It makes her special, but it also makes her dangerous. As an orphaned child, she fled with her sister, Alice, from their charlatan aunt Bellefonte, who wanted only to exploit Tabby's gift so she could profit from the recent craze for seances. Now a young woman and tragically separated from Alice, Tabby works with her adopted father, Eli, the kind caretaker of a large Boston cemetery. When a series of macabre grave robberies begins to plague the city, Tabby is ensnared in a deadly plot by the perpetrators, known only as the "Resurrection Men." In the end, Tabby's gift will either save both her and the cemetery--or bring about her own destruction.

Bailedbailed

I‘ve been reading too many books I haven‘t liked lately and I‘m sick of it. I decided to bail on this one 197 pages in.

I just couldn‘t stand Caleb or honestly Tabby. All the decisions she made were infuriating. I just didn‘t like anyone and was not enjoying myself while reading.

I liked the other 2 Hester Fox books I read, so it might just be this one. I‘ll pick up her other books in the future.

DGRachel Bailing is good. Reading is supposed to be fun or at least enjoyable. 3y

Stopped at a winery on our way home. It was super cute and had some pretty good wine!

This book is awful. Caleb is a terrible character and love interest. He only thinks of himself and what he needs. And also the character of Tabby and her long lost sister don‘t have much plot moving the storyline forward, there‘s a lot of dull moments and it just doesn‘t entice the reader. I only finished it to add to my goals for Goodreads.

Laughterhp Oh no. Have you read her other books? Or was this the first one? Because I really liked her other books. I haven‘t read this one yet. 3y
Crazeedi I've had this on loan from library and it's about to expire, I was going to renew, but maybe I'll wait... 3y
Moonprismpower @Laughterhp I haven‘t. This wouldn‘t stop me from reading her other books. But this book was unfortunate. Caleb is so unlikable. I don‘t like cheaters, and those who throw other people under the bus. So for me the story is problematic from the beginning. I‘ll check out her other books. 3y
Laughterhp Oh gotcha. Yeah I don‘t like books with cheaters either... 3y

I liked the gothic feel to this one and the atmosphere was good. It was not creepy or spooky though, and I think I was expecting that based on the cover. Overall, I think this is a good choice for fall reads, but not necessarily Halloween reads.

Also: I had never heard of the “Resurrection Men” before, but I enjoyed doing my own outside research about who they were. Fascinating!!

I received this book from NetGalley. This was my first read from Hester Fox. The story of an orphaned medium trying to stop grave robbers. I really enjoyed the characters and how believable that they seemed. It was a gothic spooky story that was unique in style. Set in 1800s New England, the story has a great atmospheric feel. This is a great Fall story.
