Chocolate Wars
Chocolate Wars: Inside the Secret Worlds of Mars and Hershey | Joel Glenn Brenner
6 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
The first book to penetrate the secret and cut-throat world of chocolate. After ten years of research, Washington Post reporter Joel Glenn Brenner takes us inside a world as mysterious as Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, where industrial spies jockey for inside information as paranoid executives fight an all-out war for market share. Forrest Mars was one of the most private and successful entrepreneurs in America. An autocrat, with brilliant - if sometimes unconventional - management strategies, he built one of the world's most innovative companies - a $10 billion a year empire, shrouded in secrecy. The day after he died of natural causes a Mars spokesperson refused even to admit that the founder had worked for the firm. Milton Hershey was a dreamer who wanted to create not just a company but an industrial paradise. After making an immense fortune his company is now controlled by a charitable trust whose profits fund the wealthiest orphanage in the world. Never before has so much been revealed about the chocolate industry. This authoritative and eye-opening account is the best type of business narrative - a revealing, engrossing and unforgettable read. *An engrossing portrait of two of the world's wealthiest companies, both founded by men dedicated to their very different, though equally eccentric, personal visions. A fascinating insight into what began as a fraternity of family-owned businesses and has now grown into a multi-billion dollar industry dominated by cut-throat wheeler-dealing. Joel Glenn Brenner's Mars cover story for Washington Post Magazine won three prizes.

1. This nonfiction account of Hershey and Mars chocolate companies was excellent — and eye opening!
2. Dark chocolate all the way! I quite like Ghirardelli raspberry dark chocolate squares
3. 🤔 maybe Reese‘s cups or 100 Grand

WildAlaskaBibliophile Yum! I'll check out that book, sounds very interesting! 13mo

Day 7 - #ChocolateDay #FlyHighJuly
#ChocolateWars #JoelGlennBenner

This war is for real! My husband worked for a company who made boxes for Hershey Chocolate and when they saw Mars bars in the candy machine in the plant they said they wouldn‘t do business with them until the Mars bars were replaced with Hershey bars.

Pageturner1 LOL 😆 I believe it. Its all business. 4y

Melissa_J Now I want chocolate 🍫 7y
mrsmarch Mars....the real secret weapon is Mars' Ethel M chocolate factory in Nevada. M&Ms, sure, but dark chocolate lemon creams and purple prickly pear cactus creams and the boozy chocolate barrels and welp those can all come live at my house. 7y
DivineDiana @Melissa_J I agree after I read @mrsmarch 's comment!!! 😀 7y

Melissa_J @mrsmarch oh I've tried Ethel M's - my husband and I went to the factory on one of our trips to Las Vegas. The chocolates were delicious! Now I want chocolates even more than I did before LOL @DivineDiana 7y
mrsmarch @DivineDiana @Melissa_J Go to Las Vegas. Fly JetBlue if you can because one of THREE Ethel M's in existence is in the JetBlue terminal at the airport. Their factory is in Henderson NV. 7y
mrsmarch @Melissa_J I didn't fly home for 8 years and then I had to take my two and a half year old out for two weeks after my mom had surgery and the only me time I had was a drive down to Henderson and back. I bought so much chocolate omg. 7y
DivineDiana @mrsmarch Great tip! Sounds like it's worth the trip! 😉 7y
mrsmarch @Melissa_J Every time my parents come east my mom brings a pick n mix box from the airport shop. My dad tut-tuts her but what did he do last fall when he came back east for his aunt's funeral, to stay with me for two days? He brought 8-months-pregnant me Ethel M's, that's what he did. 7y
Cinfhen Yum!!! All this chocolate talk 😋😋love your take on this challenge 😍👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻 7y
Centique Brilliant choice 🙌 7y
