Snapshots of a Girl
Snapshots of a Girl | Beldan Sezen
7 posts | 6 read | 17 to read
Through a series of charming, self-deprecating vignettes that take place in North America, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey, Sezen navigates the messy conflicts of her life with all the honesty, humour and spunk that she can muster. The overarching plot is one of coming-out; something that Selzen must do more than once. This title fascinatingly chronicles the different responses she received when trying to do so to both her friends, people versed in the norms of mainstream Western culture and her parents, Turkish immigrants living in Germany.

Despite being a bit hard to follow at times since the author/artist will sometimes jump to her next vignette without quite finishing the previous one, you still understand the overall journey of her realizing she was a lesbian. More importantly you get to see her experience being Turkish while growing up in Germany and having to learn how to navigate both cultures and a homosexual woman. She's also pretty funny!

Enjoyed this humorous yet raw (or humorously raw) autobiographical graphic novel. I'll be looking for more of Sezen's work.

#tbrtuesday & #libraryhaul in one go! I was really surprised to stumble upon Sleepimg Giants so I snatched it up quick as can be. The Grownup was an impulse grab and the other three were holds I picked up. Interesting times ahead, no doubt.

NerdyRev I like the picture on slasher girl 8y

A moving, raw and funny graphic novel coming-out memoir set in the 1990s. Sezen's parents emigrated to Germany. She writes about "being Turkish, but not enough" and "German, but not enough." Then add lesbian identity for greater confusion!
This book was originally published in Italian and then translated to English by the author. #queerbooks #diversebooks

brendanmleonard Sounds fantastic! Thanks for the recc! 8y

At Lesbian Book Club last night, one person confessed that she didn't try to make sense of the images and only read the text. Another person only looked at the pictures. That made for an interesting discussion of this graphic memoir! (Image above is a fairly typical page spread.)

Bibliogeekery Did you enjoy this book? I love hearing about new-to-me #queerbooks 8y
BookishFeminist I love that you guys have a lesbian book club! 💗 Also interested in hearing your thoughts on this one- I've been eyeing it on my library's overdrive for a while. 8y
Lindy @Bibliogeekery Yes, I enjoyed it. Took a few pages to adjust to her drawing style and hand-lettered text, but then I was hooked. 8y

Lindy @BookishFeminist The group has been going strong for 11 years. We try hard to find voices from outside North America and Britain. 8y
BookishFeminist @Lindy That's amazing! That's a long lasting book club. Have you guys read Under the Udala Trees? Also this came out recently (it's my current read) and it's wonderful so far! 8y
Bibliogeekery @BookishFeminist Under the Udala Trees in my queer book club's next read. I'm glad you are enjoying it! I haven't started it yet but we need a win because the past few books have not been popular. #bookclubdrama 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibliogeekery I haven't read Under the Udala Trees yet but I've heard nothing but great things about it. Soon hopefully! Here Comes the Sun is my current read. 😊 #BookClubDrama can be serious sometimes! I feel like an outlier in my feminist book club sometimes. What books didn't go over well?! 😳 8y
Bibliogeekery @BookishFeminist - oh gotcha, I misunderstood your previous post. The books that didn't fly well were You Set Me On Fire - Mariko Tamaki, mixed reviews for All Inclusive - Farzana Doctor and also mixed for Salt Fish Girl - Larissa Lai. It feels like we just need one that enough folks are excited about. Also, we often read books by local queer authors some of whom we kinda know and that ups the stakes a bit too much I think. 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibliogeekery Those books all sound interesting! I love Mariko Tamaki's work so I'm definitely going to check that out. It's a shame things haven't been floating so well! Book clubs can be hard that way sometimes. The feminist book club I'm in is sometimes a bit close-minded or sheltered so I'm often pointing out problematic stuff with which they don't agree. Sigh. I hope you guys like Udala Trees better! Excited to hear your thoughts on it. 😊 8y
Bibliogeekery @BookishFeminist I actually enjoyed them all. It seems like it can be hard to strike the right note with book clubs. Sounds like your feminist one is a bit tricky that way too. It's one of the *many* things I like about Litsy - so many great book folks in one space! 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibliogeekery Couldn't agree more! I love my ladies but I'm not here for justifying racism, etc. because it was "unintentional." Makes it tricky to navigate book clubs with theme, especially I think. Yours sounds tricky too! Litsy is wonderful because when I find a problem now I can post/vent about it here to empathetic ears and it makes it better. ? Glad you're able to enjoy the books regardless of what the group thinks! 8y
Lindy @BookishFeminist @Bibliogeekery The list of books we've discussed is on the website http://lesbianbookclub.blogspot.ca/?m=1 - look for it on the full web version because the blog part isn't used much. Yes to 8y
Bibliogeekery Lindy - how has your book club managed to stay together for so long? It's really impressive that you've been meeting for 11 years! 8y
Lindy @Bibliogeekery The commitment of the leader, Kim, is the reason. She keeps a big email contact list. Membership changes over time, always open to new people. Sometimes 2 or 3 people show up, sometimes 7 or 8. Women attend when they can. Kim is the constant. 8y
Lindy @Bibliogeekery The meetings are held in a public place: an independent bookstore. 8y

Only two out of my four book clubs are meeting this month, and both are re-reads. Both are great, so hooray!

Lacythebookworm I'm eager to read The Argonauts! How did you like it? 8y
Lindy @Lacythebookworm 6 months ago when I finished reading it I felt the urge to start again at the beginning. Really looking forward to rereading and discussion. 👍 8y
