Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart
Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart | Joyce Carol Oates
6 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
Joyce Carol Oates adds to her extraordinary body of work with this stunning novel of violence and love. At the heart of the story are two people, Iris Courtney, who is white, and handsome Jinx Fairchild, the black basketball player who, in protecting Iris, kills a white man.

5/5 Terrific insights into what it feels like to be just playing a role based on what others expect of you. This theme is brought to life well using the palpable racism that percolates through small town Civil Rights era society but is quite relevant to the racial dynamics in America today and told through an absorbing romance of sorts. At the same time Oates never lets the broader themes overshadow the characters, who are all richly imagined.

@Maggie THANK YOU!!! Look at all these bookish gifts! I am in love 😍. From understanding my deep love of baseball and travel to my cool banned books mug to finding a book that I have never heard of (this was such a surprise and exactly what I am into!!!) - you nailed it. So happy right now.

That title = 🙌🏻🔥.

Carissa-Green-Reads I believe that title is borrowed from a 19th century poem. Too lazy to google, though 😬 8y

Oh, you want family dysfunction? Joyce Carol Oates is always a good place to start. #24in48 #readathon

This one is also interesting because it's about race during the Civil Rights Era, but it ISN'T set in the South.
