Hurricane Dancers
Hurricane Dancers: The First Caribbean Pirate Shipwreck | Margarita Engle
9 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
Quebrado has been traded from pirate ship to ship in the Caribbean Sea for as long as he can remember. The sailors he toils under call him el quebrado-half islander, half outsider, a broken one. Now the pirate captain Bernardino de Talavera uses Quebrado as a translator to help navigate the worlds and words between his mother's Tano Indian language and his father's Spanish. But when a hurricane sinks the ship and most of its crew, it is Quebrado who escapes to safety. He learns how to live on land again, among people who treat him well. And it is he who must decide the fate of his former captors. Latino interest.

HF novel in verse set in 16th century. “No matter how invisible I feel, I will always be wrapped in the memory of life as a captive.” —Quebrado
Aboard Talevero‘s pirate ship, Quebrado is held captive until the hurricane thrashes it to pieces. Q escapes and is rescued by a sea turtle 🐢 and an old man in a boat (not Hemingway‘s Old Man). Talevero finds Q but now it is Q who will decide his fate.

Got to finish this up this morning while waiting for the kettle to boil. A beautiful read - loved the historical notes at the end.

#ReadingResolutions Day 26: Engle‘s books are always written with #MultipleNarrators such as this. A young man finding his way in the universe belonging to no one, not even himself, seeking his center; young lovers who are desperate to be with each other, unmindful of their family‘s disapproval; war and madness, pirates and conquerors. Gorgeous, simple, lyrical. How do few words can convey so much, defies convention. My third book in verse has been as magical as the first two. Unfortunate that these stories are labeled as junior fiction. So much here for everyone.
