Deception by Gaslight: A Gilded Gotham Mystery
Deception by Gaslight: A Gilded Gotham Mystery | Kate Belli
5 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
Glittering Gilded-Age New York holds its lavish charms--and a litany of deadly sins--as intrepid reporter Genevieve Stewart uncovers a trail of corruption and murder. As a chill sets in on New York City in the winter of 1888, a jewel thief dubbed the "Robin Hood of the Lower East Side" has been stealing from the city's wealthiest and giving to the poor. Genevieve Stewart--a young woman whose family is part of Mrs. Astor's famed 400 but who has forged a life of her own as a reporter--decides to chase the story, but gets more than she bargained for: a murder victim sprawled in a dark alley in the dangerous Five Points neighborhood. A handsome neighborhood tough comes to her rescue--but when she encounters the same man at a glamorous ball a few nights later, she realizes he's society scion Daniel McCaffrey. Could this be her Robin Hood? When two more murders rock the Knickerbocker world, it becomes apparent that something much more sinister is afoot than a few stolen diamond necklaces. Genevieve is determined to prove that Daniel is Robin Hood--but she's loath to believe he is a killer as well. From the glittering lights of Fifth Avenue to the sordid back alleys of Five Points, the truth is just one murder away.

I finished this a few days ago and didn‘t have a chance to post it.

This is a mystery set in 1888 New York City. A Lady/Reporter is looking into the Robin Hood case. Someone stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. This leads her to Daniel McCaffrey who no one knows his history. He just showed up one day having inherited the van Joost fortune. They team together and try to solve a crime.

This was a pretty good mystery. I‘d recommend it.

A really enjoyable debut mystery set in NYC's Guilded Age. This appears to be the start of a new series, and I am so eagerly awaiting the next installment.

I am so jazzed about both this story and series! Genevieve is a woman who has known her fair share of humiliation and instead of letting it ruin her, it only increased her resolve to make her own way in the world as a budding reporter. I adored her gumption! At first, I didn‘t think much of Daniel but he was a character not to be underestimated! They made a fabulous team and it is them, working together, that I am excited about seeing more of.

This is the first in a series about a female journalist in late 1880s NYC. Genevieve is the youngest of an old money eccentric family who wants to prove herself in the newspaper business by tracking down a modern-day Robin Hood who may be connected to some murders and a corrupt group of elites.

This was OK but a little slow in places. It ended on a cliffhanger, and although I‘ve read better, I‘d be willing to try another. 4/5⭐️

My reading buddy found out that for once it's not tea in my mug. One day #GhostCat will drink my tea, I'm sure.

squirrelbrain As long as it‘s not gin! 4y
julesG @squirrelbrain I'll have to try that another time. And now I'm wondering what a plastered cat might look like. 4y
jenniferw88 Probably something like Jaffa after his anaesthetic the other week! No control over his back legs so very wobbly 😂😂😂 4y

aperfectmjk Your cat resembles my Trixie. Though you couldn't tell from this photo, but I snuck a peek at some others. Love siamese cats! 😻 4y
julesG @aperfectmjk She's a seal point siamese with a sprinkle of abyssinian. No papers. Not that I wanted a cat with a family tree. This little cross-eyed runt of the litter stole my heart. Perfect family cat. 4y
