pickAfter reading The Isles of the Gods by Amie Kaufman earlier this month, when I saw this book I knew I had to read it. And it did not disappoint. I loved the mix of sci-fi and fantasy elements, especially the reactions of the characters to the elements they‘re not used to (by which I mean the fantasy characters reacting to sci-fi artifacts and vice versa). But yeah: loved it.

Hold on…I‘m coming.
“I am my people‘s goddess, and you will not stand in my way.”
”What choice do I have?” she cries.
”There is always a choice!”
I don‘t know if I believe in her prophecies. I don‘t know if I believe in her gods or her destiny. I don‘t know if I believe in any of this.
But I believe in her.
“I don‘t know anything,” I tell her, spreading my hands desperately. “Except that I‘m glad I fell, Nimh.” My eyes burn as I say the words, not least because I‘ve never said them even to myself—not least because to say then means turning my back on my family. It means surrendering hope that I‘ll ever see my friends again. “I‘m glad,” I repeat. “Because I met you.”
Even spinning out of control and losing everything she ever believed in, she still has the power to steal my breath away.
“I‘m still here with you,” I murmur. The words are soft, but they‘re enough to make her focus on my face again. “I‘m real. And you‘ve taught me to believe, Nimh. In things I can‘t see or touch. But more than anything, I believe in you. And I‘m real.”
“None of us can choose everything that befalls us in this lifetime. It only makes the choices we can make all the more important.”
“Miri adds sparks to everything. Saelis makes sure we don‘t catch fire.”
I don‘t mind if she‘s scared, or sad. I want her to be human. I want her to feel. And if I can manage it, I want her to hope.
I used to dream of not being alone.
And now, here is someone to stand beside me.
What I would not give, now, for the pain of a broken arm, if it meant not having to bear the pain of a broken heart.
Forget protecting my heart—those are dumplings.
Everything else can wait.
“Many a creature is harmless unless and until one strolls into its den.”
Beyond these glimmering rock walls lies death, far as the eye can see. But the girl in front of me is so full of life.
A magic-wielding girl from Below. Good choice, North.
She‘s like a torch in the darkness, pushing away the fears and horrors of the night.
But of all the objections and protestations flashing through my mind, all I‘m left with as she meets my eyes is one thought: She‘s all alone.
I lean down to pick up the pack and swing it over my shoulders. “I‘m coming with you. Let‘s go.”
The empty vessel
will at the end of days
seek the land kissed by the sun.
For only on that journey
before a swift gray tide
will the last star fall.
The empty one
will keep the star
as a brand against the darkness,
and only in that glow
will the Lightbringer look upon this page
and know himself…
“Daoman is not the only one who can see the divine light in you, Nimhara.”
Well, as Talamar says, gotta flap if you wanna fly.
“I know it can be done,” I say. “Because I‘m the pilot and the engineer of the Skysinger. I can build you that cloudship, and I‘m volunteering to pilot it.”
Hope, all the brighter for the darkness around it, flickers.
so-soI always try the Kaufman/Spooner books because they always sound so good, but the execution isn't quite there. I think I would have enjoyed this more if they spent more time in the cloudlands as that was more interesting to me than the planet surface. #pop23 #Readyourtbr #Serieslove2023
pickOoooo I loved this one. A perfect holiday read, this is a fascinating story about two very different worlds colliding. I can‘t wait for book 2! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
pickWow, where to start. Two authors have come together to bring us this beautiful woven story, two worlds coming together one from the past the other from the future. North(Cloudlander)has fallen for the sky and Nimh (Goddess) has left her temple to find the fallen star to complete the prophesy, They have been destiny to meet and bring the change of two worlds, but what happens when love enters the playing field.

I don‘t read that much fantasy, much less YA fantasy, but this one was pretty great. The two worlds were such a great complement to each other, and the cliffhanger was probably one of the best I‘ve read. Plus, a cat is one of the best characters! 🐈😍

What an interesting dystopian-ish world that these Authors have created here. One realm, Nihm‘s, is on the ground with fantastical elements and North‘s is in the sky with futuristic-techy elements. Unfortunately, I couldn‘t always stay in the story, but I did really want to...so that‘s saying something.

The books I picked up yesterday. I hadn‘t heard about the tagged book, but I saw the cover and.. there was a cat! And it also sounds like a very cool concept. I‘m having trouble getting into Furyborn, so I might try it out tonight.
