'Entertaining, erudite, eccentric - The Bookseller's Tale is a delight' Alison Light, author of Common People: The History of an English Family 'The right book has a neverendingness, and so does the right bookshop.' This is the story of our love affair with books, whether we arrange them on our shelves, inhale their smell, scrawl in their margins or just curl up with them in bed. Taking us on a journey through comfort reads, street book stalls, mythical libraries, itinerant pedlars, radical pamphleteers, extraordinary bookshop customers and fanatical collectors, Canterbury bookseller Martin Latham uncovers the curious history of our book obsession - and his own. Part cultural history, part literary love letter and part reluctant memoir, this is the tale of one bookseller and many, many books.

I had my last day as a bookseller before I transition into a grad student! I‘m going to miss being surrounded by books all the time and all of the knowledge I gained about the book publishing world. I‘m not going to miss the constant temptation to buy books! I‘m looking forward to starting my studies in August though!

💐I also decided to go for a more fun username. I changed from @MadelineMccrae to @RosePressedPages 💐

RosePressedPages The drink is a sunset refresher my coworker made me for my last day 💗 9mo

RosePressedPages @Ruthiella I will be studying political science with an emphasis in international relations. I‘m interested in researching Eastern European politics and how history is used as a political tool and weapon for authoritarianism in the region 😊 I‘m super excited! 9mo

Pickpick

I absolutely adored this book & can't think of a single reason why any self-respecting bibliophile wouldn't love it too. The reviews on the back say it all, really. It is just so elegantly written & absolutely jam-packed with fascinating stuff to do with books! My favourite section was that on 'comfort books' - the things the author had to say resonated deeply. It has a wry wit & simply vibrates with the joy & love of books. Highly recommended ❤️

Today's little treat, Pt 1. Great cover.

Still plodding along with this! I think part of my problem is that I'm not quite sure what the point is. The chapters seem pretty unrelated. It's just... generally about loving books, with no end-point in mind. Or so it seems!

I don't know why I'm so slow with this; it should be my thing. I think I just don't get on with something about the author's style. Boo and alas. :(

Latham loves books a LOT. And I mean books in the sense of codices; I am waiting for the part where he gets upset about ebooks, despite generally enjoying his enthusiasm for the physical thing. I'll be surprised if he doesn't hit out at some point.

I love both, and I hope I never give anyone the impression I'm looking down on them for their preference!
