House of Correction: A Novel | Nicci French
8 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
In this heart-pounding standalone from the internationally bestselling author that People calls razor sharp, a woman accused of murder attempts to solve her own case from the confines of prisonbut as she unravels the truth, everything is called into question, including her own certainty that she is innocent. Tabitha is not a murderer. When a body is discovered in Okeham, England, Tabitha is shocked to find herself being placed in handcuffs. It must be a mistake. Shed only recently moved back to her childhood hometown, not even getting a chance to reacquaint herself with the neighbors. How could she possibly be a murder suspect? She knows shes not. As Tabitha is shepherded through the system, her entire life is picked apart and scrutinized her history of depression and medications, her decision to move back to a town she supposedly hated . . . and of course, her past relationship with the victim, her former teacher. But most unsettling, Tabithas own memories of that day are a complete blur. She thinks shes not. From the isolation of the correctional facility, Tabitha dissects every piece of evidence, every testimony she can get her hands on, matching them against her own recollections. But as dark, long-buried memories from her childhood come to light, Tabatha begins to question if she knows what kind of person she is after all. The world is convinced shes a killer. Tabatha needs to prove them all wrong. But what if shes only lying to herself?

This was the perfect book to immerse myself in on a rainy night. Interesting storyline, and Tabitha made me laugh out loud more than once.

Probably one of the more interesting contemporary mysteries I've read in awhile, though as always it's marketed as a thriller. I do think the ending could have been worked out better because it involves a serious theme that needs better fleshing out. But the fresh perspective of a woman struggling with depression and defending her own case while imprisoned worked well; I thought the characterisation was the strongest element of the book.

BarbaraBB That is a great recommendation. I haven‘t read a Nicci French in years. 3y
batsy @BarbaraBB This is my first and I would like to check out the Frieda Klein series! This one is not a typical thriller and is more a detailed character study; I get the sense that some of the lacklustre reviews were because people expected a high-stakes thriller :) 3y
BarbaraBB I loved their first books and then they were so hyped where I lived that the snob in me stopped reading them. Your review means a lot though. 3y

Cathythoughts Great review! I‘ve never read this author ... must investigate 3y
batsy @Cathythoughts Thank you! It's a pseudonym for a husband and wife writing pair & my TBR continues to grow as I add their books to my list 😆 3y
TrishB I‘m reading this at the moment and have nearly given up at 20%. I may carry on due to your review. You‘re definitely right, I was expecting a thriller and didn‘t get it and my head is finding it hard to adjust. I love the Freida Klein series though. 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ It started out slow, and it takes place in a prison which I never like to read about. But then the story gets interesting when Tabitha starts to investigate the murder she has been accused of committing by using the evidence the prosecution has turned over to her so she can conduct her own defense. The trial was also written very well. But then the reveal: Stinkaroo. I‘d call this more of a crime drama than a thriller #bookspinbingo No. 9

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 4y

Interesting premise and had potential, but the ending felt so prepackaged that I felt cheated by my investment. A village outcast wrongly accused of murder defends herself in court. But the big whodunnit reveal at the end...eh.

mollyrotondo I agree. The reveal was a flop. 4y
