Even As We Breathe
Even As We Breathe: A Novel | Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle
19 posts | 13 read | 35 to read
Nineteen-year-old Cowney Sequoyah yearns to escape his hometown of Cherokee, North Carolina, in the heart of the Smoky Mountains. When a summer job at Asheville's luxurious Grove Park Inn and Resort brings him one step closer to escaping the hills that both cradle and suffocate him, he sees it as an opportunity. With World War II raging in Europe, the inn is the temporary home of Axis diplomats and their families, who are being held as prisoners of war. Soon, Cowney's refuge becomes a cage when the daughter of one of the residents goes missing and he finds himself accused of abduction and murder. Even As We Breathe invokes the elements of bone, blood, and flesh as Cowney navigates difficult social, cultural, and ethnic divides. After leaving the seclusion of the Cherokee reservation, he is able to explore a future free from the consequences of his family's choices and to construct a new worldview, for a time. However, prejudice and persecution in the white world of the resort eventually compel Cowney to free himself from larger forces that hold him back as he struggles to unearth evidence of his innocence and clear his name.

That ending hits you right in the feels. ASC is from my community, tribe, and is a former boss of mine and this is an honest review. ᎣᏥᎨᏒ ᏃᎴ ᎠᎩᎸᏗ ᏍᏈᏍᏓ. ᎤᏙᏳ ᏃᏛᎦ ᎣᏍᏓ.

Really excellent debut fiction about a young Cherokee man trying to find his path in 1940s North Carolina. I just visited this area and found this work by a local author. Highly recommended - good characters and relationships, interesting time period and setting, and a little mystery. #indigenousauthors

This book has been on my radar since Silas House (writer) posted about it on insta. I think he mentored Clapsaddle while she wrote this. Set in Cherokee & Asheville, NC, this is a coming-of-age story about Cowney Sequoyah, a Cherokee in 1942. Deals with racism, first love, loss, & his family history. A really good book.
I remember how uncomfortable I felt when I went to Cherokee as an adult about 10 years ago. I wanted to ask the guys 👇

Scochrane26 performing for tourists if they resented having to make money that way or if they enjoyed getting white tourists‘ money. It‘s a pretty drive & has a Cherokee museum there, but I didn‘t get to see the museum that day. 3y

This book was part mystery part coming of age. During World War Two a young Native American man takes a summer job at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC to earn enough money to go to college. The Inn was used to house high ranking prisoners of war, and when the daughter of one goes missing all eyes fall on the guy with the brown skin. This short book is well worth a read.

These mountains have ingested our bones for centuries so that we might renew this soil with memory- memories of our people- our strengths and weaknesses- our losses and loves.

Scochrane26 I have to go pick this up from the library tomorrow, been wanting to read it for a long time. 3y

A beautiful book with beautiful writing and a beautiful main character. Cowney is just someone you want to love and protect. Set in Cherokee and the Grove Park Inn, my beautiful Pawpaw was never far from my mind. He wasn't Cherokee, but he was a person I loved and cherished, no matter the color of his skin. I'm proud to be of his bloodline. He was ashamed of being an Indian. Racists made him ashamed. Isn't he beautiful @megnews @sblbooks

megnews He is. I‘m so sorry he felt that way. But what a wonderful heritage you have! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ve read a bunch of stories with Native American characters and authors lately. This one would be a great addition, especially since it‘s set in the 1940s. Thanks for the heads up! 3y
Butterfinger @megnews It never crossed my mind what he experienced till I read this book.
Thank you for inviting me to read with you. I remembered my Nanny fussing and telling me to stop asking for Indian stories because I could never understand why he wouldn't.

A very beautiful story of a young Cherokee man's journey in life and its circumstances, his first and greatest love, his love of his grandmother, and his ties to his homeland.

What a heartfelt ending!

Was lax posting at the end of 2020, but had to share this beautiful novel about a young Cherokee man working at Asheville's Grove Park in one summer during WWII, when the Inn has turned into a detainment center for high ranking prisoners of war and their families. When a young girl goes missing, a fish-out-of-water situation becomes something much more dangerous.

ChasingOm Ooh, that sounds good! 3y
WhatWouldJaneDo @ChasingOm I stayed up late with this one because I could not put it down! Clapsaddle also thinks she may be the first member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee to publish a novel. Hopefully she will have many more! 3y
