Overstated
Overstated: A Coast-to-Coast Roast of the 50 States | Colin Quinn
25 posts | 7 read | 12 to read
In Colin Quinn's new book, the popular comedian, social commentator, and star of the shows Red State Blue State and Unconstitutional tackles the condition of our union today. Utah: The Church of States Vermont: The Old Hippie State Florida: The Hot Mess State Arizona: The Instagram Model State Wisconsin: The Diet Starts Tomorrow State The United States is in a fifty-states-wide couples counseling session, thinking about filing for divorce. But is that really what we want? Can a nation composed of states that are so different possibly hang together? Colin Quinn, comedian, social commentator, and writer and star of Red State Blue State and Unconstitutional, calls us out state-by-state, from Connecticut to Hawaii. He identifies the hypocrisies inherent in what we claim to believe and what we actually do. Within a framework of big-picture thinking about systems of governmentafter all, how would you put this country together if you started from scratch today?to dead-on observations about the quirks and vibes of the citizens in each region, Overstated skewers us all: red, blue, and purple. Its ultimately infused with the same blend of optimism and practicality that sparked the U.S. into being.

On South Dakota: “Can you really look me in the eye and say you‘ve given it your all to be a fun and interesting state? You were riding off the fact that North Dakota looks at you like you were the hip brother but the rest of us have seen things and we know a dud when we meet one. Maybe being associated with North Dakota is holding you back.”

This reminded me of a CBS Sunday Morning monologue. I love CBS Sunday Morning. ☺️

Comedy doesn‘t always translate from the spoken to the written form, but much of this is solidly funny. I even snort-laughed a couple of times. Some knowledge of the states is a pre-requisite for this one, and I have that, so I really enjoyed it!

Thanks for the suggestion, Scott! @vivastory

vivastory Glad to hear you enjoyed it! 4y

Utah's state bird is the seagull because seagulls saved the people of Utah from starvation when swarms of crickets threatened to wipe out their crops. The seagulls ate them, I guess. Or else they chased them out and said, "Don't come back." Probably ate them.

keithmalek @vivastory I love snow, but that's because I live in NYC and don't have to drive in it. 4y
vivastory I could see that. Snow didn't bother me too much until I lived in Minneapolis for 4 years. I could honestly go the rest of my life without seeing any & be perfectly content. 4y
Patchshank Snow is nice and pretty until you have to go out in it. If I could just stay inside all winter I would like snow. But since I can't stay inside I hate it with a passion. 4y

On Minnesotans: What can you say about people whose idea of a vacation is renting a shack on a frozen lake and carving out glory holes for fish?

Maybe the system sometimes stinks too. You ever think a system you've been using for 240 years that probably worked well for about 70 years in spurts isn't that infallible?

We're immediately off to an unusual start. (Did Trump write this book?)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A roast of the 50 states? Yes, please! Colin Quinn, who I‘ll always associate with “Remote Control,” (y‘all young people might need to google that 😂) gives a brief history of each state while spouting sick burns left and right. He pretty much nailed the states I‘ve lived in - KY, AL, CO, WI, UT, TN. Wisconsin was by far my favorite; brutal, but accurate. A fun listen!

Megabooks Sounds cool and Remote Control was the best!! 4y
britt_brooke @Megabooks It was such a fun show! I think you‘d enjoy this one. It‘s good fun! 4y

Mollyanna Remote Control!!! Ah, what a show....book sounds fun too. 4y
Hollie I‘ll have to check this out- I‘m in Kansas, which always manages to be an embarrassment- so I‘m interested to see what the book has to say about the sunflower state! 4y
Traci1 I loved Remote Control, and Colin! ❤ 4y
britt_brooke @Mollyanna Loved the show! An you‘re right, this book is really fun! Quinn‘s narration makes it even better. 4y

Entertaining and quick read. Colin Quinn, during his “Red State, Blue State” show, broke down each state with a satirical summary. This book is an expansion of this part of the routine. Humorous with some insightful truths. I really enjoyed it.

TieDyeDude Such a great comedic mind. I hope my library gets this in soon 4y
