8 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
As Europe prepares for war during the summer of 1940, two couples - expatriate Americans fleeing Paris and wealthy bohemians beset by the social and sexual anxieties of their class - arrive in Portugal where their lives become inexplicably entwined in unimaginable - and dangerous - ways.

Pickpick

THE TWO HOTEL FRANCFORTS was exactly what I needed: a tense, intensely focused look at one American refugee‘s sojourn in 1940 Lisbon. Leavitt‘s prose is both perfect for the time period and clear to contemporary readers. His characters feel achingly real in their flaws and desires. The emotions ring true throughout. I can‘t wait to share this particular book with at least three people, then explore the rest of his hefty bibliography myself.

xicanti @charl08 that one sounds a bit more active rather than psychological, but also really good. I‘m gonna add it to my library list. 5y
charl08 @xicanti I think Seghers really understood what it was like to be stuck in limbo. I will look for a copy of this. 5y

I‘ve finally got some reading time, and a chance to try the first locally-made gose I‘ve come across!

The book‘s still wonderful. If the beer were marketed as a mango sour, I‘d call it a success; as a gose, it‘s a failure. Sadness.

CarolynM I liked this one a lot. I'm a bit of a David Leavitt fan. 5y
xicanti @CarolynM this is the first time I‘ve read him, but I‘ll definitely be exploring more of his work. He‘s doing it for me in a big way. 5y

Oof. #bookreport time. This week, I:

• finished MAKING UP, which was good but not my favourite Parker
• read one volume of TO YOUR ETERNITY and got close enough to the end of another that I should finish it tonight
• started THE TWO HOTEL FRANCFORTS, fell in love with it, and got too busy to wallow as I wanted to. BLAH.
• read LDKBUWM and promptly forgot all about it 🤷‍♀️
• read “Mistborn: Secret History” and reread “The Emperor‘s Soul” ⬇️

xicanti • started BECOMING and—please don‘t hate me—discovered I ain‘t wild about Obama‘s prose style. I may not continue.
• didn‘t start JAPANESE NOTEBOOKS
• squeezed in a Jackie Lau holiday novella
• finished WESTSIDE, THE ART OF COMMUNICATING, and A CHRISTMAS CAROL on audio

Breakfast was baked eggs over taco meat, with THE TWO HOTEL FRANCFORTS on the side. @BookishTrish gave me this book as part of Cupid Goes Postal, and I‘m sorry it took me so long to get to it. It‘s excellent so far; full of glorious tension and fascinating historical detail.

I‘m amazed I hadn‘t heard of David Leavitt before, too. According to a blurb on the back, he‘s “one of the major voices of contemporary fiction,” and he‘s written a ton.
