"Fans of such notables as C.J. Box, Peter Straub, and Joyce Carol Oates chiefly known for their novels will be pleased to see how well they write at shorter length."--Publishers Weekly Some people might tell you that crime short stories, unlike the more precious kind, are a kind of fictional ghetto, full of cardboard characters and clichd situations. Not true. These stories are remarkably free of bullshitalthough theres always a little, just to grease the wheels, writes guest editor John Sandford in his introduction. From an isolated Wyoming ranch to the Detroit boxing underworld, and from kidnapping and adultery in the Hollywood Hills to a serial killer loose in a nursing home, The Best American Mystery Stories 2017 hosts an entertaining abundance of crime, psychological suspense, and bad intentions. The Best American Mystery Stories 2017 includes C. J. BOX, GERRI BRIGHTWELL, JEFFERY DEAVER, BRENDAN DUBOIS, TRINA COREY, CRAIG JOHNSON, JOYCE CAROL OATES, PETER STRAUB, and others

I picked this up on a whim when I was at the library and ended up really enjoying it. My attention span has been really limited these days so short stories did the trick! #slaughterthon #TeamSlaughter #Scarathlon2020 #IVotedEarlyReadathon

I read three stories this morning:
Williamsville: A man shows up in a pioneer Alaska town looking for revenge.
Abandoned Places: Ian‘s dad left him without a word and he needs to find out why.
Flight: The person who holds the key to the deaths in the hospital can neither speak nor move. How can she get someone to listen?

Today‘s short mystery was about a woman who sent her husband to ask for money from her ex-boyfriend at his grow op. Honestly I‘m not sure what the mystery was here but I enjoyed the story. #Scarathlon2020 #TeamSlaughter #ReadYourWay #CocoTurns50

Tonight‘s installment, The Master of Negwegon, took place along the Great Lakes- one of my favorite settings for a story. This one wasn‘t much of a mystery because you know the killer from the beginning, but it was interesting to see how it would be resolved. #TeamSlaughter #Scarathlon2020 #ReadYourWay #CocoTurns50

CocoReads I might need to check that out, I enjoy a good Great Lakes setting too. (edited) 4y

The first story in this book features a family of boxers who must figure out why a bookie is suddenly so eager to fix a fight. #Scarathlon2020 #TeamSlaughter #CocoTurns50 #ReadYourWay
