I‘ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I‘ve enjoyed this alt-history western series. Harris has crafted an intriguing world with interesting characters. I don‘t know that they have a lot of depth, as most everyone‘s motivations are uncomplicated and clear, but it‘s still fun to be along for the ride. The audiobook narrator is growing on me, too.

Well, I can say that I‘ve read book three, and it‘s very readable, but wasn‘t really crazy about it. I liked seeing the characters again. But overall, book three in this series felt too simplistic and kinda slow. On the other hand, Harris writes in a way that makes it hard to put the book down.

This is a really fun series and supposedly there is a new book coming (soonish hopefully). Definitely start with the first book. This is the third. There's a lot going on. The main character is a hired gun. But there's also some magic/fantasy type stuff. It's a little violent but she's a hired gun so expected.

Avanders Oooh I didn‘t know there was more coming! 3y
vlwelser @Avanders in 2022 supposedly. According to Goodreads. But it doesn't even have a title yet, so who knows. 3y
Avanders @vlwelser 🤔 well, hopefully! 🤞🏽 3y

This was suspenseful and such fun! You for sure need to read this series in order, absolutely. This time Lizbeth is off to the Holy Roman Empire, San Diego specifically, to try and rescue Eli who is in prison. Of course she sees her half sister, and Felix, and other old friends/foes. Gunnie has some great one-liners, and I easily kept turning the pages. 4 stars and can‘t wait for the next book! Book 3 for #deweysreadathon

Readerann That does look like fun! Good to see you had a successful RAT. It was great to unplug for a day, wasn‘t it? 3y

I don't think Alt-History is Harris forte. The first two books are readable because she writes character really well. However here it all just becomes a struggle. The world building is not brilliant and the politics of it is leaden and weighs the plot down. To escape she has Lizbeth Rose act in ways which didn't feel like her character to me.

But Harris has that magic touch where I find her easy to read even as I see the flaws.

This is the third book in Harris‘ Gunnie Rose series. The series follows girl named Lizbeth (Gunnie) Rose. In this future history novel, America has been divided into five distinct areas: The Holy Russian Empire, New America, Texoma, Dixie, and Brittania. Gunnie tries rescue her partner, Prince Eli, from The Holy Russian Empire where he is imprisoned having been accused of murder. Bonus: There‘s magic involved! Expected publication: Feb 23, 2021.
