Welcome to Magnolia Lane. It's not exactly a little slice of heaven, but in the backwater town of Creekside, Kansas, it's the best a jobless supermarket clerk like Andrew Morrison can do.After sacrificing a normal childhood, a decent education, and true love to look after his alcoholic mother, he's finally breaking free and living his own life -- but in the squalid house he's sharing with a former childhood friend, the living isn't exactly easy. Plus, there's something about the chipper, all-American couple next door that's just downright creepy. However, that doesn't keep Drew from accepting a job as their handyman -- or surrendering to the wiles of perfect housewife Harlow Ward, a woman who always gets what she wants.Drew, like a string of hapless young men before him, doesn't realize he's dancing with a devil -- one dressed to the nines in high heels and pearls.

Set in the fictional rural town Creekside KS, Andrew moves in with his childhood friend after a falling out with his mother. Andrew hasn't seen his friend, Mickey in years & his attempts to reconnect are frustrated by Mickey's silence & terrible housekeeping. Andrew becomes fascinated by the idyllic appearance of the next door neighbors, the Wards. This is my fifth, & least favorite, Ahlborn novel. There's only one work I've read by her I've 👇

vivastory liked less & that is her novella The Pretty Ones (collected with the magnificent novella I Call Upon Thee in the collection Apart in the Dark). There are a couple of unsettling moments present in Neighbors, but it's running a bit low on nightmare fuel. It does have a great epitaph, dedication, plenty of messed up bits & a nicely plotted ending. A decent second book for Women in Horror Month, high expectations considering the author. (edited) 3y
BarbaraBB I don‘t even know this author. What book did you like best - in case I want to check her out?! (edited) 3y
vivastory @BarbaraBB My favorites have been The Devil Crept In & The Seed. Both of them really unsettled me. 3y

BarbaraBB Thanks! 3y
BarbaraBB I looked them up. They seem scary!! I think I‘ll start with The Seed 😱 (edited) 3y
vivastory @BarbaraBB They are very scary! I honestly typically don't find too many books scary, but she is a reliably terrifying author. Especially those two. 3y
BarbaraBB I love it when that happens! 3y
Reggie @BarbaraBB if you think you can do it go with Brother, to me that was her most disturbing and horrifying novel. The Seed, The Devil Crept In, and The Shuddering by her are all pretty good books. 3y
vivastory @Reggie I'm surprised I haven't seen it rec after people have been praising Tender is the Flesh 3y
Reggie @vivastory hmm Now that you mention it, that was in there, but I associate Brother with really dysfunctional family dynamics. 3y
vivastory @Reggie That's true. Once someone pointed out that Ahlborn's books aren't graphic & I think that's true, it's just how she sets up scenes. It's what she implies in her books that's really unnerving at times. 3y
BarbaraBB @vivastory @Reggie You both make me very curious. As you might know I loved Tender is the Flesh. I‘m not sure in what wat it relates to Ahlhorn but it sounds like a recommendation! Should I go with Seed or Brother first? Choices 😅 (edited) 3y
Reggie @BarbaraBB both are very dark winners. Can‘t go wrong with either. (But read Brother!) 3y

1) Nope. V Day is my younger brother's birthday. I think we're celebrating with carry out pasta & wine.
2) The only theme reading I plan for this month is for Women in Horror Month. I haven't started yet, but I plan doing so tomorrow after I finish Stamped from the Beginning (again can't stress enough how mind blowing it is). I have the following lined up: Plain Bad Heroines, Gemma Amor's Dear Laura, Butler's Fledgling, Gran's Come Closer, tagged.

emilyhaldi Women in Horror sounds like a romantic theme to me! 🧟‍♀️😆 3y
vivastory @emilyhaldi Horror, my true love 😂 3y

RohitSawant That's a great line up! Have Gran's Come Closer queued up on Kindle. 3y
vivastory @rohit-sawant It's great to see you back man!! I've heard only wonderful things about it. I'm looking forward to all of them. (edited) 3y

Poor Andrew, thought he was getting away from his alcoholic and dysfunctional mother, only to find out the grass isn't always greener behind the white picket fence. I'm working my way through Ania Ahlborn's disturbing books, loving them all so far!

Whew, last night was rough. I was up most of it, trying to take care of my sick boyfriend. Luckily he is finally getting some sleep, so now to dig in and read all day.

I think I‘m officially in “read all the horror” mode, until at least December (or I run out of what I have on my shelves). 🖤

Ps. I‘m in love with my new coffee mug. 💀

StellaDz Omg that mug! 😍😍😍 6y

Andy left home for a new start with Mickey, a former childhood friend, so he moves into his dilapidated home. Across the street is a Leave It to Beaver style couple who seem perfect, but Andy learns the truth as the couple takes a special interest in Andy.

The story was okay, it lacked suspense & it was predictable. This isn't a supernatural book, so I wish the story felt more realistic. Andy is also much too naive.

KrystleTheBookSlayer Trigger warning for themes of sexual abuse (although not overly graphic). 6y

Much, much better than The Bird Eater. Ahlborn is at her best when she stays away from the supernatural! Parts of this book did feel a bit rushed, but other than that I liked the story.

Andrea4 Hadn't heard of this one but I actually love all her supernatural stuff! 6y
tricours @Andrea4 I prefer good old fashioned human cruelty 😬 6y
Andrea4 @tricours haha yea, I guess I'm more the opposite-easier to stomach for me. 6y

This was a meh. Read it in one sitting. Definitely be prepared to suspend your disbelief. Was an okay quick read to pass the afternoon but wouldn‘t recommend. Rather disappointed as I‘d had this one on Mt. TBR for quite some time and was looking forward reading it. WARNING: EVERYONE in this book is constantly “chewing on the pad of his/her thumb” to the point I was concerned it was perhaps contagious.

DGRachel That‘s an odd habit for lots of people to have. 🤔 6y

Day 2 of #noteworthyNovember: I‘m OB-SESSED with Ania‘s work. I was supposed to start The Silence of the Lambs today, until I read this sneak peak. The things I choose to read in the #dark...

MidnightBookGirl I like her too! 6y

Started this before bed last night. Drew moves in with childhood friend Mickey to escape the smothering codependence of his alcoholic mother. Mickey's place is the sore thumb in a street full of pretty, picket fenced houses and none more perfect than the next door neighbors'. Harlow looks like a cookie cutter 50s housewife but there's clearly something sinister next door...

⭐⭐⭐⭐ I zipped through this, and for the most part, enjoyed it. I just hope I never have neighbors like that anywhere near me! For your sake, I hope you don't, either.

Starting this one tonight. Love thy neighbor lol

DGRachel I read SEED by Ania Ahlborn several years ago. I'm still haunted by it. Not sure I'm brave enough to read anything else by her. 😳 8y
