A Bright Ray of Darkness
A Bright Ray of Darkness | Ethan Hawke
The first novel in nearly twenty years from the acclaimed actor/writer/director is a book about art and love, fame and heartbreak--a blistering story of a young man making his Broadway debut in Henry IV just as his marriage implodes. A bracing meditation on fame and celebrity, and the redemptive, healing power of art; a portrait of the ravages of disappointment and divorce; a poignant consideration of the rites of fatherhood and manhood; a novel soaked in rage and sex, longing and despair; and a passionate love letter to the world of theater, A Bright Ray of Darkness showcases Ethan Hawke's gifts as a novelist as never before. Hawke's narrator is a young man in torment, disgusted with himself after the collapse of his marriage, still half-hoping for a reconciliation that would allow him to forgive himself and move on as he clumsily, and sometimes hilariously, tries to manage the wreckage of his personal life with whiskey and sex. What saves him is theater: in particular, the challenge of performing the role of Hotspur in a production of Henry IV under the leadership of a brilliant director, helmed by one of the most electrifying--and narcissistic--Falstaff's of all time. Searing, raw, and utterly transfixing, A Bright Ray of Darkness is a novel about shame and beauty and faith, and the moral power of art.

3.5/5 🌟

Ending 2023 with this impassioned book centered around an actor navigating a divorce. Truth be told, I picked it up solely because it's Ethan Hawke! While some parts captured my interest, the sections focusing on the Shakespearean play were just passable for me, given my lack of interest in theater or acting. Overall, it's a decent read. The audiobook, narrated by Ethan himself, is fantastic!

Happy New Year, everyone! 🎉🥂

This book features:
-An utterly despicable, spoiled man-child of a narrator
-Fragile masculinity and misogyny galore
-A 5-year-old child who says that "morning is healing" and describes the weather as "breathtaking"
-Not one female character who ever behaves like an actual human being instead of a pair of sentient breasts

But it also includes the passage outlined above and goddamn if my idealistic, theatre-loving heart didn't cry when I read it.

mrsmarch To be fair to five year olds, “this weather is breathtaking” is something mine would say. She‘s a blessed little mimic and 6 now, and said to her mimi the other day, “Mimi, we won‘t discuss it. I can‘t countenance it!” 1y

What inanimate item are we being compared to today, ladies? Key lime pie? Fabulous! 🙄 (I can't believe this is real, and I can't believe I continue to read it.) #MenWritingWomen

Andrea313 @slategreyskies @Ruthiella @BarbaraJean @BarbaraBB @quietjenn Publication date the year of our Lord 2021. SPARE ME. He has managed to out-Bukowski the man himself. This is some real Jack Kerouac/Neal Cassady-type shit. /derogatory 1y

dabbe From no less than Ethan Hawke? WTH? 😱 1y
Andrea313 @dabbe @SamAnne @Susanita Right? Part of me wants to ease up, as Hawke is clearly crafting a character who is flawed and immature. But that'd be easier to stomach if pretty much any other male character had any respect for women in the narrative, or if any woman written had a small spark of rationality or interior life and wasn't just a walking body whose only aim is to be the MC's sex toy or Mommy. Seriously, it's pretty bleak. 1y

A story by the real Hollywood actor and director, of a fictional actor who cheats on his wife and then seeks out drugs, sex, and a powerful performance of Shakespeare‘s Henry IV (as Hotspur) on Broadway to redeem himself. It‘s an average read about a whiny protagonist who blames everyone else for the mess he has created. But the passion for theatre and Shakespeare is evident and added to the story.

CarolynM I really liked this, especially the theatre stuff. I loved how he thought Hotspur was the hero and how crushed he was to realise his mistake. 2y

#BookReport for August. The Stone Angel and A Bright Ray of Darkness are my top 2 for the month.

Cinfhen How are you?? Any restrictions lifted yet?? Glad you‘re finding the headspace to read and escape with books ♥️ 3y
Cinfhen Who was Ethan Hawke married too?? I can‘t remember/ his novel sounds good and maybe meta-fiction? Semi autobiographical? #stacked 3y
CarolynM @Cinfhen We are still in hard lockdown, but unfortunately it's not driving the numbers down. It's frustrating. But the weather is improving (sunny and 24C today) so that's cheerful, anyway. Hawke was married to Uma Thurman. There seemed to me to be a lot of parallels between himself and the actor in the novel. I loved the book. It probably helped that I'd seen the play they're performing - Henry IV Part 1 - quite recently. 3y
Cathythoughts Nice reading month 👍🏻 I want to read Stone Angel 3y
Cinfhen Right!!! Uma Thurman!!! I‘m sorry your numbers aren‘t improving/ that‘s the most frustrating part, I think. We are seeing our highest numbers again, too but the new government is trying very hard to avoid a 4th lockdown. Sending love 💕 3y

William, a youngish movie star, is making his Broadway debut as Hotspur in a production of Henry IV Pts 1&2 just as his marriage ends & his private life becomes tabloid fodder. The story follows his journey through rehearsals, previews & the run of the play, while he mourns his marriage & tries to be a good father to his 2 young children. I loved it, especially the stuff about the play & the theatre.👇 #Bookspin

CarolynM ☝️ There are clear parallels with Ethan Hawke's life. I'm left wondering just how autobiographical it is. 3y

I was pleasantly surprised by how deep this book was. A film actor attempts Shakespeare on Broadway as his marriage implodes and in the end he learns a lot about his own selfish tendencies (or does he?).

Love the Shakespeare scenes, hated the main character. Of course, he is supposed to be plummeting. Still, I wanted to like the Ethan Hawkeish character.

I loved this story. It‘s authentic and very real. The things we do to deal with our very human problems. Mix in a little Shakespeare and you got a damn fine novel.
