From Hugo Award Winner S. L. Huang "S. L. Huang is amazing."Patrick Rothfuss Burning Roses is a gorgeous fairy tale of love and family, of demons and lost gods, for fans of Zen Cho and JY Yang. Rosa, also known as Red Riding Hood, is done with wolves and woods. Hou Yi the Archer is tired, and knows shes past her prime. They would both rather just be retired, but thats not what the world has ready for them. When deadly sunbirds begin to ravage the countryside, threatening everything theyve both grown to love, the two must join forces. Now blessed and burdened with the hindsight of middle age, they begin a quest thats a reckoning of sacrifices made and mistakes mourned, of choices and family and the quest for immortality. I went to the bookstore to pick up a copy of “the Mirror Visitor” for a swap. While there I found this.

In this incredibly unique fairy tale reimagining, an aging Rosa has teamed up with a renowned archer after running from her complicated past. But as they set out to confront an enemy close to Hou Yi, Rosa finally begins to open up about the events that brought her here. I loved how this story slowly showed its teeth and it's fairy tale connections. A really great and quick read.

This was an awesome little novella mixing together western and eastern fairy tails.

First book finished in 2021! A novella about two older queer women friends Hou Yi and Rosa (one trans, one cis) who embark on a quest to end attacks by destructive sunbirds being sent by Hou Yi's son. Both have dark pasts and need redemption. The narrative skips back and forth in time telling mostly Rosa's story. Fairy tales are woven in and retold, including Little Red Riding Hood and Robin Hood. Interesting, but didn't grab me emotionally.

This quarter‘s Tailored Book Recommendations have arrived, and while everything here looks absolutely perfect for me, I already own two of them. *sigh* I think I will be discontinuing the hardcover subscription and just keeping my email myTBR subscription. 😩 #bookmail

TrishB That‘s a shame! 3y
ImperfectCJ Oh, no! I always worry that they're going to send me something I already have. Hasn't happened so far, but this quarter they accidentally sent me two copies of each hardcover. Now I need to figure out whom to gift the extras to. 3y
DGRachel @TrishB maybe it‘s a sign I buy too many books? 🤣🤣 3y

DGRachel @ImperfectCJ Last quarter there was one book I already had, but since I had a BOTM copy, I didn‘t mind getting a “normal” edition. Two of the three, though? That‘s tough to stomach and. I can‘t justify continuing the hardcover subscription when there‘s no recourse. 3y
ImperfectCJ @DGRachel I absolutely agree. I guess it's a sign that they're choosing books well, but still...you want something you don't already have. 3y
CocoReads I love the title of Blacktop Wasteland. But yes, if you already have 2/3 it‘s probably time to cancel that part of the subscription. 3y
ImperfectCJ @DGRachel (I mean, choosing well in the sense that they're picking books you would like enough to buy for yourself.) 3y

This is a queer ... not quite retelling but uses the characters of Little Red Riding Hood and the Archer with a sprinkling of other fairy tale characters, in a story of family, revenge, love, and combat training.

Branwen This looks AMAZING! 😍 3y
