Friday Barnes 1: Girl Detective
Friday Barnes 1: Girl Detective | R. A. Spratt
12 posts | 8 read | 28 to read
Imagine if Sherlock Holmes was an eleven-year-old girl! When girl detective Friday Barnes solves a bank robbery she uses the reward money to send herself to the most exclusive boarding school in the country, Highcrest Academy. On arrival, Friday is shocked to discover the respectable school is actually a hotbed of crime. She's soon investigating everything from disappearing homework to the Yeti running around the school swamp. That's when she's not dealing with her own problem - Ian Wainscott, the handsomest boy in school, who inexplicably hates Friday and loves nasty pranks. Can Friday solve Highcrest Academy's many strange mysteries, including the biggest mystery of all - what's the point of high school?

I talked myself into doing a photo reading challenge thing - and obviously we start with the TBR...

I lowkey don‘t particularly believe in setting them because I hardly ever follow through but these ones are also on my #BookSpin list... so maybe some will get read?! TBD!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I like your shelves. 4y

The first book in middle-grade girl detective series, and it was fun. I loved the deadpan narration throughout and the blink and you'll miss it humour. Very understated but will appeal to the sarcastic oddball tween (or adult). Friday's personality doesn't quite come through as vividly as, say, Flavia's in the Flavia de Luce series, but I'm looking forward to reading the rest and getting to know her better.

sisilia This sounds fun! 4y
batsy @sisilia It is. Such a nice break from the heavy reads :) 4y
batsy @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I scrolled down the book page and remembered that it was you who brought this to my attention! I really enjoyed it :) 4y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘m glad! Also recommend the authors podcast - she reads one of her stories a week. Mostly standalone stories but some chapters from the Friday Barnes and Nanny Piggins series. I especially enjoy her retelling of the 3 little pigs. 4y
Abailliekaras My daughter likes this series so I‘m going to look up Flavia de Luce. 4y
ravenlee I really enjoy this series. Unfortunately my libraries only have the first four so I stalled there. 4y
erzascarletbookgasm Looks like a series I would have enjoyed if I‘ve discovered it when young 👍🔍 4y
batsy @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Oh, nice! Thank you! 4y
batsy @Abailliekaras I really enjoy the Flavia series :) 4y
batsy @ravenlee Oh, that's too bad... It's really an enjoyable read and I hope the others in the series are as good! 4y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Yes, I think I'll always be drawn to girl detectives 😁 4y
cherylmorton My son reads these books over and over. I‘ll have to check out the authors podcast 4y
rubyslippersreads Looks like fun. 😊 4y
batsy @cherylmorton Oh that's so cute! I would have done the same if these books were around when I was younger :) 4y
rubyslippersreads @batsy I just started this; after Lucy Gayheart, I need something much less intense. (edited) 4y
batsy @rubyslippersreads I hope it does the job :) 4y
rubyslippersreads @batsy Actually, it‘s a very nice break from real life in general right now. 4y
batsy @rubyslippersreads 100%. That's probably why I enjoyed it so much. 4y

This was a fun read, although a bit old for my daughter (subject, not ability).

Friday is an unusual child in an unusual family. She takes up solving crime, which earns her reward money, which finances boarding school, which turns out to be full of mystery. Looking forward to the next one (darn cliffhanger).

Tamra What age range would you suggest? Are there illustrations? 5y
ravenlee @Tamra there are some illustrations but not many. I‘d go with age 10-12 or so. MC is 11 and going to boarding school for seventh grade. There‘s a bit of crush stuff, blooming awareness of class difference and clothing reflecting that. Not inappropriate for my 6-year-old but I don‘t think she‘d get into it. 5y
Tamra @ravenlee thank you - I‘ll check out a library copy to peruse. 5y

Well this is potentially something that I could be very excited about because I loved the Friday Barnes series 😂 I‘m nowhere near the target age demographic but sometimes that doesn‘t matter ☺️😂 no one makes me laugh like R.A. Spratt!

I love this series so much that I‘m actually in deep denial about the last book being the last book... maybe I could just reread and tell myself there is an endless supply?!

AmyG What grade is your daughter in...who go Friday Barnes? I am always looking for good books for my niece who is in 1st grade. 7y
Joanne1 @AmyG my eldest has just finished grade 2 (which I assume is the same as 2nd grade), she's 8. She doesn't read them on her own but an advanced reader could. She loves the stories though and so do I so reading them to her is super fun. 7y
Joanne1 @erzascarletbookgasm I'm sure they will... and so will you. 7y
Joanne1 @TheDoubleLetterThief should I ask if they come in adult size next optometry check? 😃 7y
AmyG @Joanne1 Thanks. Her parents read to her so I may just pick this up for her bday. 7y

I also picked up from Costco, a boxed set of the first five Friday Barnes novels for $23. Not bad at all. The box is a bit squished, which I didn't notice until I got home, but the books themselves are fine. I'd never heard of her before Litsy, she sounds right up my alley though. Wish they were around when I was younger. Can't wait to read them with my granddaughter! #thecostcoexperience

This was a treat! Smart and funny. The writing is sharp. Friday is a terrific, quirky character - a little Sherlockian in her crime solving. Several mysteries in this one story. Can't wait to read book 2!

#bookssetinaschool, I love R.A. Spratt books - I can never get myself to a bookstore quick enough on a release day 😍 Anyway, Friday Barnes, youngest daughter of some world renowned scientists whose work consumes them (they're not great as parents), solves a baffling bank robbery and uses the rewards money to send herself to an exclusive boarding school. Let the crime capers commence! #booktober

Dedebimp Humm. Sounds interesting 8y

'When her father walked past her bedroom at 1 o'clock in the morning on a school night and noticed that her light was still on, he would, like a normal parent, say, 'Shouldn't you be in bed?'
But unlike a normal parent, when Friday said 'No, Father, it's only 8pm,' he would just nod, take her word for it and go back to thinking about quasars.
