“Sometimes, you have to let go of what you want to find out what you really need.”
I think this book would be a great book to have in the classroom because it provides insights of friendship, acceptance, and the different challenges that come with having allergies and how to deal with them.
this book describes the different challenges in life of friendship, one‘s identity, and the impact allergies can have on you. This story shares about a girl named maggie who has a desire to have a dog but then learns she has a severe allergy to them.
Allergic is a book I will definitely have in my classroom library in the future. It is a great book for kids because it addresses themes of longing, empathy, and resilience. It helps children understand that sometimes we can‘t have what we want, but there are other ways to connect and find joy. The relatable characters and engaging story make it a great choice for young readers.
This book is about a girl who wants a pet but her allergies make it hard. As she tries to find a solution, she learns about love, friendship, and accepting her limitations. The story is filled with warm illustrations and relatable moments that resonate with kids who have similar experiences.
This is a terrific MG graphic novel about a girl who loves animals and wants to be a vet - then finds out she's allergic to anything with fur or feathers. It's also about friendships, and feeling left out, and anxiety about a new baby coming, and finding out who you are - or who you might be - in the face of obstacles.
Great for Telgemeier fans, or anyone with allergies.

I thought that this graphic novel did a great job with perspective as you followed Maggie's journey of the struggle to find a perfect pet. This book was very relatable and gave great insight for young readers.
The graphic novel, Allergic, by Megan Wagner Lloyd is beautifully written and illustrated. This book is very appropriate for young readers in grades 3-6 as it shares the story of a young girl trying to find a perfect pet. This book's use of sequence and perspective allows the reader to feel like they are actually in the story. Overall, this book is super-relatable.
I‘m not doing the #LetsGetGraphic readathon this week, but I just happened to finish this graphic novel this week. Cute story about a girl who desperately wants a pet, but is desperately allergic to animal fur. Great subplots about making and keeping friends, and dealing with big life changes. I‘m going to pass this on to my 10 year old.
What a great graphic novel, showing what it‘s like to be a kid with (non-food) allergies that affect daily life. Maggie desperately wants a dog but turns out to be severely allergic to anything with fur or feathers. Maggie just wants something to love her best, as her brothers have each other and her parents have a new baby on the way. There‘s a lot of growing up to be done and Maggie becomes a better sister and friend.
Where was this book when I was a kid with allergies? LOL! I love that kids with allergies will get to read it today. Having allergies can be an isolating experience. This will help a lot of kids with similar experiences. Representation matters!
5/5 ⭐️ so happy this book exists! It's something I would have loved to see when I was a kid. Just like Maggie the main character, I had very severe allergies as a kid. I teared up multiple times as I understand how hard it is when you want to have a pet so badly, but are allergic.
My #bookspin is Allergic which I loved such a cute Gn about allergies and friendship

A delightful middle grade graphic novel about a young girl who is THIS CLOSE to getting the puppy she‘s always wanted when she discovers, much to her terrible, heartbreaking disappointment, she‘s allergic to anything with fur. Getting over her disappointment won‘t be easy and the road is bumpy but with a little help from some new friends, a surprise encounter with one of her brothers, and a new discovery, Maggie might just be ok. A fun one.
Fantastic middle grade graphic novel. For fans of Real Friends, Rollergirl and any Raina Telgemeier.
We enjoyed reading this one together! It‘s not often Lily (5 years old) sees characters who also have allergies in books, so this was great! 💙
Lily‘s review: “I love it and I will give it five stars. It‘s amazing and awesome.”
Sure to be a hit with the Smile and Roller Girl crowd
if you or your kids are a fan of Telegmeier (Guts, Ghosts, Smile, Etc), then consider giving this one a try. Another fictionized true story of an author told in graphic format.
