Little Mermaid | Jerry Pinkney

In this captivating reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen's classic, Caldecott medalist and bestselling artist Jerry Pinkney conjures a poignant friendship story and an epic tale of redemption -- the definitive new version for our time.Melody, the littlest sea princess, is not content just to sing in the choir of mermaids like her sisters. She is an explorer who wonders about what lies above the water's surface . . . especially the young girl she has spied from a distance. To meet her requires a terrible sacrifice: she trades her beautiful voice for a potion that gives her legs, so that she may live on land instead. It seems like a dream come true at first. But when trouble stirs beneath the ocean, Melody faces another impossible choice -- stay with her friend, or reclaim her true identity and save her family.Legendary artist Jerry Pinkney's singular reinvention of this tale about love and sacrifice empowers young, twenty-first century girls with the strong message that you should never give up your voice . . . for anyone.

I enjoyed the character Zion and how she urged Melody to return to the sea to help her family.

I enjoyed this version of the little mermaid. I am so used to the Disney narrative of this story but I found it refreshing to read this classic story from a different perspective and with new characters. I think it would be fun to read to a class to see their reaction to this version compared to the Disney version.

“This is where I want to be”
This is one of the main concepts of the little mermaids stories. The grass is greener on the other side concept. Classic line.

This is one of my favorite pages from the book. Its the climax and it indeed gives the effect of the climax. So many things happening at once without looking cluttered. So many different creatures and colors, beautifully drawn. I love the art!!!

The retelling of the classic “The Little Mermaid” the imagery is so detailed for a water colored book. Each page you could stare at for so long! So many things to look at and take in! Love!

This variation to the Little Mermaid tale is absolutely amazing! And, of course the illustrations are breathtaking. Definitely a longer #PictureBook , but well worth the journey. Letter L #BBRC

Great version to share with kids who are not ready for the original. And ask yourself, what are we sacrificing of ourselves to gain acceptance? As adults are we expecting anyone to sacrifice a part of their identity?
