Something New Under the Sun
Something New Under the Sun: A Novel | Alexandra Kleeman
8 posts | 7 read | 9 to read
"East-coast novelist Patrick Hamlin has come to Hollywood with simple goals in mind: overseeing the production of a film adaptation of one of his books, preventing starlet Cassidy Carter's disruptive behavior from derailing said production, and turning this last-ditch effort at career resuscitation into the sort of success that will dazzle his wife and daughter back home. But California is not as he imagined: drought, wildfire, and corporate corruption are omnipresent, and the company behind a mysterious new brand of synthetic water seems to be at the root of it all. Partnering with Cassidy--after having been her reluctant chauffeur for weeks--the two of them investigate the sun-scorched city's darker crevices, where they discover that catastrophe resembles order until the last possible second"--

While this isn‘t the best book I‘ve read this year, I actually stayed up all night reading it! 🙌🏻 It makes me want to read more dystopian cli-fi because I loved this.

A writer goes to LA to work on the adaptation of his book to a movie, but he ends up a glorified assistant to its star, who want to be paid in water. Meanwhile everyone else on the West Coast is drinking WAT-R, a synthetic water, but is it a true substitute or something sinister?

squirrelbrain I really liked this one, until the end. I just thought the ending was a bit meh…. 2y
Cinfhen Great photo!! Hadn‘t heard of this book….interesting🤓 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks! We bought this spinner from our neighbor‘s estate, and I love seeing it in the backyard. It even has LEDs at night! 👍🏻 2y

Megabooks @squirrelbrain the ending was a bit disappointing, but it‘s for sure a pick for me! 2y
Cinfhen Ohhhhh, I‘d love to see how it looks at night!! 😍great addition for your garden😘 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m going to post a daytime video on Instagram, but we don‘t get as much wind at night, so it‘s only been blowing well once when I‘ve been out with Molly at night. 2y
Cinfhen 👍🏻 2y
batsy I'd always meant to give Kleeman a try. This book sounds fascinating; feels like it's both out there and a very possible reality, the way things are going 🙃 2y
Megabooks @batsy I did not like her debut, but I‘m so glad I gave her another chance! She is wildly imaginative! Her debut I didn‘t like -> 2y

I‘m not even sure how I feel about this book except to say it‘s dark, weird, and eccentric; and I think I liked it! Patrick travels to LA to work on a movie version of his novel and meets sassy starlet, Cassidy who loves bossing him around. Climate change, corporate greed, corruption, and family are all addressed in this novel that may haunt my dreams for days to come!

Cinfhen Great review!! 3y

Did not love this one as much as I thought I would. In theory, the novel is about a writer who goes to LA to work on the set of the movie based on his novel, when he gets assigned to babysit the temperamental young star. But really it‘s an allegory for climate change and the destructive power of humanity.

Must finish current read before starting To Paradise
Must finish current read before starting To Paradise
Must..
Actually, I am really enjoying the tagged book. It's bizarre, bonkers, and I like it.
Soon my paradise, soon

squirrelbrain Be interested to hear what you think about the ending of this one…. 🤷‍♀️ 3y
Oryx @squirrelbrain I can't imagine where it's going. I'm about two thirds through 3y
rockpools Yep. Absolutely. Must do that. *hides* 3y

I read this one for the #RoaringWolf challenge #1. I've never read anything from this author before and it was an interesting book. This was a difficult book for me to read because of all the gloom and doom and because of all the unanswered questions throughout the reading. @Roary47 and @Littlewolf1. Just learning to participate in challenges and join my fellow Littens in the fun.

Roary47 I‘m glad you tried the author and our challenge. Welcome! 😊💛 3y

This sounded really interesting and was looking forward to read it. After 100 pages realised just wasn't feeling any of the characters and plot, so stopped.

My last two Mr B's subscription books this year. Am skeptical that I'll like the Shelley Parker Chan one (She Who Became the Sun) but I'll give it a go. But Something New Under The Sun sounds right up my street. 🌞🌞🌞
 @Mitch

Mitch Cool! I actually bought She Who Became The Sun after listening to a fab podcast review ⭐️ 3y
eraderneely I just finished and loved She Who Became the Sun! 3y
Oryx @eraderneely @mitch ok I'm feeling more positive about that one now, thank you! 3y
Caroline2 I‘ve got She who on my kindle. It sounds good. 👍 3y

I really don‘t agree with the blurb on this book; it‘s weird and unsettling and exactly what we *don‘t* need in these uncertain times!

Novelist Patrick heads to LA to oversee one of his books turned into a film. However, the world is facing environmental catastrophe and there appears to be something wrong with the WAT-R that everyone now drinks.

A great read, and I can see why it‘s on the #ToBlonglist but the ending was a bit of a let-down.

Cinfhen You‘re making GREAT progress on the #ToBLongList 🙌🏻🎉♥️ 3y
BarbaraBB What Cindy says. And I adore this cover!! 😍 3y
Hooked_on_books Keep in mind who the blurb came from—Vandermeer writes some seriously weird stuff! 😂 3y

Ruthiella Agree with Cindy! You are a reading machine. I‘ve never read Kleeman but want to. If this doesn‘t make the shortlist, I‘ll start with 3y
Megabooks Kleeman‘s books are weird AF. Her debut gave me nightmares, which is rare for a book, so I‘ll probably pass unless this makes the shortlist. (edited) 3y
squirrelbrain I‘ve never read any Vandermeer Holly @Hooked_on_books - maybe I won‘t if he‘s a bit weird! 3y
squirrelbrain Oh dear @Megabooks - that doesn‘t sound good. 😬 This one gave me similar vibes to the tagged book, which I loved, but it wasn‘t as scary (although weirder) because the Hollywood setting gave it some distance from ‘real life‘ whereas I felt the Alam book could really happen. (edited) 3y
squirrelbrain @Ruthiella - give me a challenge and I can‘t help myself! 🤷‍♀️ That‘s why I‘m trying to do less next year, but not succeeding very well so far! 🤣 3y
BookLineNSinker The end of this book was definitely my problem with it... There were so many loose ends for my taste. 3y
squirrelbrain Yes, I agree @BudgetingBookwormBabe - it just seemed to tail off towards the end. 3y
