Men Who Hate Women
Men Who Hate Women: From Incels to Pickup Artists: The Truth about Extreme Misogyny and How it Affects Us All | Laura Bates
A groundbreaking book that pulls back the curtain on the terrorist movement no one is talking about Women's rights activist Laura Bates has been the target of many misogynistic attacks online: from hate-fueled Twitter rants to vivid descriptions of her own rape and even death threats. At first, the vitriol seemed to be the work of a small handful of individual men... but over time, the volume and consistency of the attacks hinted at something bigger and more ominous. As Bates followed the thread of online misogyny farther into the corners of the internet, the spiral of hateful and toxic rhetoric deepened until she found an unseen, organized movement of thousands of anonymous men wishing violence (and worse) upon womenthe terrorism no one is talking about. Men Who Hate Women examines the rise of secretive extremist communities who despise women as Bates traces the roots of misogyny across a complex spider web of groups extending from Men's Rights Activists to trolls and the incel movement. Drawing parallels to other extremist movements around the world, including white nationalism, Bates shows what attracts men to the movement, how it grooms and radicalizes boys, how it operates, and what can be done to stop it. Most urgently of all, she follows the pathways this extreme ideology has taken from the darkest corners of the internet to emerge covertly in our mainstream media, our playgrounds, and our government. Going undercover on and offline, Bates provides the first comprehensive look at this under-the-radar phenomenon, including eye-opening interviews with former members of these communities, the academics studying this movement, and the men fighting back. By turns fascinating and horrifying, Men Who Hate Women is a broad, unflinching account of the deep current of loathing toward women and anti-feminism that underpins our society and is a must-read for parents, educators, and anyone who believes in equality for women. "Men Who Hate Women has the power to spark social change."Sunday Times

Many young boys go into You Tube & find their way to these sites which are preaching these principles of hate against women. It‘s all crafted in a certain way to make boys unaware (as well as their parents) of what they are stumbling upon. Social media has long since been complicit in not shutting these men down. Not to mention the media also plays a part in how people that commit violent acts are “good or misunderstood” aka White men/boy who was

ncsufoxes “a lone wolf, smart but misunderstood, they didn‘t mean it.” I lived in Poway, CA where the shooting at the synagogue happened a few years ago. The kid that did it became radicalized very quickly. He was a few years older than my son. His dad was a teacher at my son‘s high school (where the shooter also went). The parents were stunned to find out about how he had been radicalized. They disowned him & have not talked to him since he was arrested. 4d
ncsufoxes They disavowed what he did & were no part of his trial. The dad stopped teaching for a year. It was horrible to watch but it put this stuff on my radar & started talking about it with my teenage son. This book gave me more insight into just how horrible this web connecting alt-right, misogyny, white supremacy, racism is all connected to this disgusting place called the manosphere. (edited) 4d

One of those highly important books, especially at this moment. This info is more relevant now than when it was written just a few years ago. Reason is the current president is a convicted felon for assault & this shows the men in the manosphere that they can get away with anything & not be held accountable. I am horrified for my daughter to know that there are men (boys being mainstreamed into this narrative) that women are evil. That women are

ncsufoxes the reason why men are not succeeding (not the fact that the education system in most states is failing many or that most people in the US read at a 7th grade level). You Tube & most other social media are cesspools which allow people to preach hate & glorifying brutalization of women…all in the name of free speech. Young boys are unwittingly drawn into these hate filled narratives under the guise of “manliness.” Hard read but very necessary 4d

Perfect example of sexism. My daughter had 2 fliers sent home for basketball camps at the high school down the road. Both camps are sponsored by the same booster club. The boys get a nice card & the girls get a photocopy. Also the boys camp only has a $5 late fee for registering after a certain date & the girls it‘s a $20 fee. I told my husband that this shows girls don‘t matter as much as boys (I know that most parents don‘t think this but it

ncsufoxes irritates me). It shows girls sports are not as important as boys. I know that most young girls do not see this & think that but this is the message we are reinforcing. Now I need to figure out who to speak with about this. (edited) 1w
Bookwormjillk This is why I was so excited when my daughter started playing field hockey. Here it‘s only a girl‘s sport. Soccer was infuriating! 1w
Amiable As a female who grew up playing softball, basketball and soccer during the ‘80s, I feel this so much. We were always second-class citizens it came to athletics. 1w

RamsFan1963 Every year, when it's time for the NCAA March Madness, the men's games get all the attention, the major broadcasts and all the newspaper & internet space, while the women's tournament is treated as an afterthought. It pisses me off, the women's tournament usually has better games and storylines, but if you don't go looking for the games on ESPN 2 or 3, you'd never know a tournament was even being played!! 7d
RamsFan1963 And, don't even get me started on how the WNBA is treated compared to the Gods of the NBA 😡😡😡 7d
ncsufoxes @RamsFan1963 tell me about it. Our 9 year old daughter likes basketball & we try & watch more games with her but they‘re so hard to find. We are NC State alumni & when the women‘s team made it to the final four we watched the games with her. Women‘s soccer is the same way. I wish they would show more matches on tv but they‘re of course don‘t. It‘s hard to show your daughter (& sons)strong women when they don‘t give them equal air time. 6d

I‘ve been slowly reading this book for the last month. I want to part vomit, throw the book across the room, sign my daughter up for every self defense class from now until eternity. My oldest (he‘s 21) he‘s been telling me for the last few years that social media is a cesspool. He said the white supremacy is so bad. It‘s good to be knowledgeable but ugh this is horrific. Its of course only gotten worse since the 🍊one is back & now that he‘s a

ncsufoxes convicted offender it only gives these groups more power & lack of restraint. 1w

This was written in 2020. It‘s galling how much worse things have gotten since then and frustrating how many of the online right wing figures referenced feel dated, but have been seamlessly replaced in online spaces by NEW online misogynists (and government officials).

A challenging but important read covering how the red pill / incel movements pervade (more than we realise) for the harm of all people and their intersection with white supremacy.

TrishB I couldn‘t get through this one as it was so awful! Well done. 1mo
Balibee146 @trishb I think she is excellent at describing all the layers feeding into these subcultures in accessible language, which is helping. It is hard to stomach though for sure.... Half a chapter a day is about all I can take at a time.... 1mo

Such an important read. I like that it is written by a UK author, so she looks throughout the world at this issue. Though unfortunately a lot of this has the US as ground zero. It is things I knew but didn't "KNOW"
Both enraging and informative.
First book for #NFNovember @Bookwormjillk

Bookwormjillk Yikes 😳 Will have to add this to my TBR. 7mo
DogMomIrene Given some of the stats I‘m seeing about gender gaps in the US election, I may need to read this sooner rather than later. 7mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @DogMomIrene I am glad I read it before today. I don't know if I could get through it after last night. American men really, really hate women 7mo

At its simplest the argument goes like this: if women‘s sexual autonomy has given them wicked & tyrannical control over men‘s lives, then women‘s liberation is at the root of all male suffering. Therefore, the obvious remedy is to remove women‘s freedom and independence and to use specifically sexual means (like rape & sexual slavery) to do so. In other words, the problem is not women having sex but women having the choice of whom to have sex with

DogMomIrene Whoa! You have my attention with thus quote. Definitely will need to read this one. 7mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @DogMomIrene it is a real doosey of a book. Broken up into chapters incels, players, and some other very internet heavy groups of men who basically do not see women as humans. She is a British author so it has a global look (though have to say most of it is US centric) 7mo
DogMomIrene @ChaoticMissAdventures sounds so good! Frustrating and disturbing but that‘s okay. 7mo

“It is not women, or even feminists, who have limited, frustrated, diminished, hurt, and damaged men but masculinity itself or, rather, our society‘s constricting, toxic, self-defeating version of what it means to perform being a man. Yet every time anybody tries to make progress in tackling this particular version of masculinity, the MRM rises up as a united voice to condemn and undermine the attempt.”

Hibernation for now. Work and other things very stressful and I just can‘t read about these men anymore who‘s only thoughts in life are to rape and murder women 🥲 you have to be in a very good place to read this. Like being bludgeoned with hate.

A few minor criticisms: 1) It's a bit repetitive, 2) Domestic violence is not terrorism. It is disgusting, appalling, cowardly, and unacceptable. But it is not terrorism just because it is deeply upsetting. 3) She only dedicated one sentence to this, but she believes that the gender sections of toy stores should be eliminated. It's this type of nonsense that makes people hate liberals.

Other than that, this book is important and disturbing.

keithmalek I would put this somewhere between a So-So and a Pick. 3y

#TheMenWhoHateWomen is a terrifying must-read. Especially the first chapter * Men who kill Women * clearly proves how dangerous these groups have become and how even terrorist acts are committed by them.
