Vermilion Drift
Vermilion Drift: A Novel | William Kent Krueger
10 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
Some nights, Corcoran OConnor dreams his fathers death. William Kent Kruegers gripping tale of suspense begins with a recurring nightmare, a gun, and a wound in the earth so deep and horrific that it has a name: Vermilion Drift. When the Department of Energy puts an underground iron mine on its short list of potential sites for storage of nuclear waste, a barrage of protest erupts in Tamarack County, Minnesota, and Cork is hired as a security consultant. Deep in the mine during his first day on the job, Cork stumbles across a secret room that contains the remains of six murder victims. Five appear to be nearly half a century oldconnected to what the media once dubbed "The Vanishings," a series of unsolved disappearances in the summer of 1964, when Corks father was sheriff in Tamarack County. But the sixth has been dead less than a week. Whats worse, two of the bodiesincluding the most recent victimwere killed using Corks own gun, one handed down to him from his father. As Cork searches for answers, he must dig into his own past and that of his father, a well-respected man who harbored a ghastly truth. Time is running out, however. New threats surface, and unless Cork can unravel the tangled thread of clues quickly, more death is sure to come. Vermilion Drift is a powerful novel, filled with all the mystery and suspense for which Krueger has won so many awards. A poignant portrayal of the complexities of family life, its also a sobering reminder that even those closest to our hearts can house the darkestand deadliestof secrets.

As a security consultant, Cork stumbles across a secret room deep in the mine that contains the remains of six murder victims. Five appear to be nearly half a century old—possibly related to a succession of women who disappeared at that time. Residents called it “The Vanishings”

I need to read all of these books now! Two of the previous books in the series posted here just made me hate the authors so much. Why do you do this to your readers??? Now I can‘t decide which one I should read next, so will have to read them all. The horrible life of a reader who has to make choices 🤣🤣🤣 #SeriesLove2023

TheSpineView The reader does have a tough life!😅😅😅 13mo
EadieB Great series! I‘ve read them all! 13mo
Andrew65 Yep, authors sometimes kill us! I need to get to the CJ Box series, I own the first one. Looking at these a lot of good reading ahead. 13mo

I wasn‘t in love with the last Cork O‘Connor book for a number of reasons, but I really liked this one. When Cork finds some bodies in an abandoned mine, two cases combine — a new murder and an old serial killer case. We, along with Cork, learn a good deal more about Cork‘s parents. The story moves right along, unlike Heaven‘s Keep, sustaining my interest. Couldn‘t walk today because of thunderstorms.

I only have a couple of hours left in this book, so I should be finished soon. I wanted to walk for 2 miles today, but it was just too hot; I made it for a mile. I might have to start using the indoor track. 😞 #audiowalk

I swam today! It‘s the first time in over a year. I wasn‘t sure what my distance would be — I figured 500 yards, but I was able to swim 1000. 😊 That‘s my rec center at the top left. I can‘t decide if I‘m going to like this book or not. All of Cork‘s family members are gone for one reason or another and I hate seeing him alone. The mystery is interesting though. #audiowalk

Back to the Cork O‘Connor series after a short break. Here the government wants to put a nuclear waste dump in Tamarack County. There are protests and threats. While investigating the threats, Cork discovers six bodies in an abandoned mine. #audiowalk

I‘ve been in a reading slump lately; I hope this brings me out of it.

Slajaunie Good Luck! 🍀 5y
Blueberry Have you read the rest of the series? 💜 5y
Tomigirl44 @Slajaunie Thanks - so far, so good - I‘m a slow reader but I‘m almost halfway through. @Blueberry Yes, I‘ve read all the previous ones in his series as well as a stand-alone book (which I also enjoyed) - I figured this book would pull me out of my reading doldrums and I was right 😊 (and it‘s also a library book so I need to read & return soon). 5y

Not my home state but Krueger's writing describing Minnesota is reminiscent of my home state of Michigan. I'm transported with every book, and they are mysteries so BONUS! And the covers are lovely! #readjanuary #setinmycity

AnnieReads Agreed! His Cork O'Connor series are fantastic and the book covers are gorgeous. 7y
lynneamch Yes! Read his books if you want a truer understanding of Midwest living than you would get from Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend. For the same reason I recommend 7y
LizzyM I have never read any of his novels but you make them sound like they would be right up my alley. I am going to have to try one! 7y
