Silverview | John le Carre
10 posts | 13 read
In Silverview, John le Carr turns his focus to the world that occupied his writing for the past sixty years--the secret world itself. Julian Lawndsley has renounced his high-flying job in the city for a simpler life running a bookshop in a small English seaside town. But only a couple of months into his new career, Julian's evening is disrupted by a visitor. Edward, a Polish migr living in Silverview, the big house on the edge of town, seems to know a lot about Julian's family and is rather too interested in the inner workings of his modest new enterprise. When a letter turns up at the door of a spy chief in London warning him of a dangerous leak, the investigations lead him to this quiet town by the sea . . . Silverview is the mesmerizing story of an encounter between innocence and experience and between public duty and private morals. In his inimitable voice John le Carr, the greatest chronicler of our age, seeks to answer the question of what we truly owe to the people we love.

I remember reading some Le Carre as a teenager - Dad was a fan, being in the demographic. This posthumous publication seemed not bad, but simply a little less. I was not certain what was happening at times. The relationship between Lily and Julian seems to come out of nowhere. But it did remind me that I enjoyed le Carre and to dig out some of his earlier books.
I usually find Obama‘s lists flawless so was disappointed.

This was published posthumously and was completed by John Le Carre‘s son. Unfortunately I felt a bit underwhelmed with this one and it won‘t stick in my memory. If it is your first book by this author don‘t let it put you off many of his great books.

Twainy Exactly, this was my first & last from this author. Disappointed. (I imagine there were better) 2y

🎧 This was my first book from this author and his last written.

ABOUT A BOOK SELLER?? YESSS!!

I‘m a little disappointed. I wasn‘t sure what to expect but I think I was anticipating more bookish talk LOL

It was still well written so if you‘ve read & enjoyed his previous books you will probably enjoy this one too.

John le Carrie‘s last novel is a unique peek behind a life of espionage and people‘s motivations. A short novel that packs a lot of themes to ponder.

I know it‘s a little weird that my first John le Carre novel was the last one he wrote! I enjoyed it, but I have to say I think I understood about 70% of what was going on. 😂 Have any of you read his spy novels? Did you find them confusing? (As an aside, I really liked the audiobook narrator!)

This book felt like it is from another era. A nostalgic read for me. John Le Carre's last espionage novel published after his death. Not sure I will remember this over time but it was nice to in his writting again. 3 🌟

Why on Earth have they started featuring new books mid-month, after most people have locked in their boxes? At that point it just seems like you'd wait until November. Weird. #BOTM

JenReadsAlot That's stupid... 3y
Breanne1 I hope the November books are good, this mid month drop of add ons is frustrating 3y

Extract from first chapter of Silverview- One of my Dad‘s favorite authors and in remembrance, one of mine as well. So much on morality and betrayal of trust-link also includes link to audio reading! https://www.theguardian.com/books/ng-interactive/2021/oct/09/they-told-me-i-was-...
