My Sweet Girl
My Sweet Girl | Amanda Jayatissa
Paloma thought her perfect life would begin once she was adopted and made it to America, but she's about to find out that no matter how far you run, your past always catches up to you... Ever since she was adopted from a Sri Lankan orphanage, Paloma has had the best of everything--schools, money, and parents so perfect that she fears she'll never live up to them. Now at thirty years old and recently cut off from her parents' funds, she decides to sublet the second bedroom of her overpriced San Francisco apartment to Arun, who recently moved from India. Paloma has to admit, it feels good helping someone find their way in America--that is until Arun discovers Paloma's darkest secret, one that could jeopardize her own fragile place in this country. Before Paloma can pay Arun off, she finds him face down in a pool of blood. She flees the apartment but by the time the police arrive, there's no body--and no evidence that Arun ever even existed in the first place. Paloma is terrified this is all somehow tangled up in the desperate actions she took to escape Sri Lanka so many years ago. Did Paloma's secret die with Arun or is she now in greater danger than ever before?

This was almost a DNF...but I trudged through and finished it. The main character is whiny and angry. The story was far fetched, and honestly, a bit ridiculous.

Its been a while since I haven't been able to put down a book (or rather press pause)! What a ride! The narrator is somewhat unreliable, and the cuts to black are frequent. Its hard to believe them at face value. Its so well written! And the audiobook was just done perfectly! Highly recommend for anyone looking for their next thriller read.

I strongly considered bailing on this a couple of times, and I should have, as I frankly hated it. The main character is so angry, yet that‘s never really explored (it could have been interesting). Then after a certain point, the book just drags to it‘s not at all surprising conclusion. It‘s awful. Great cover, though.

TheBookHippie It‘s so pretty 😝 2y
Librariana I always love and appreciate your honesty 😊 Yay Holly!! No sense wasting time on bad writing or plot development or characters! 2y

Man, this has Hollywood movie script, M. Night Shyamalan written allllll over it! I haven‘t enjoyed twists this good since I binged some Twizzlers yo! Okay now that I‘ve got that out of my system, ugh my reading has been side-lined due to a new job. Absolutely LOVED the angle of this one - a past in a foreign country, crazy weird events, and there‘s me, just lapping up mystery like a dog in his bowl. Full review ScrappyMags.com

This was an interesting read. I have to say I did guess the big plot twist fairly early on but not all the details about how it came together. There were a couple of other twists that caught me by surprise. I found the story interesting but didn't thrill me quite as much as i hoped. Paloma is just so fundamentally unlikeable. Even by the end, I wasn't sure how I wanted her story to end. #Netgalley 3*

This entertaining thriller is a great recommendation for fans of the genre and it's Sri Lankan connection gives it a different twist. While the storyline and ending is a perhaps a little far-fetched, it is fiction and I enjoyed both the story and the characters.
