Dog Park: A novel | Sofi Oksanen

INTERNATIONAL BEST SELLER A captivating story of intrigue, betrayal, and murder in the global fertility market--from acclaimed writer Sofi Oksanen, "an international publishing sensation frequently likened to Stieg Larsson" (The Guardian). Helsinki, 2016. Olenka sits on a bench, watching a family play in a dog park. A stranger sits down beside her. Olenka startles; she would recognize this other woman anywhere. After all, Olenka was the one who ruined her life. And this woman may be about to do the same to Olenka. Yet, for a fragile moment, here they are, togetherlooking at their own children being raised by other people. Moving seamlessly between modern-day Finland and Ukraine in the early days of its post-Soviet independence, Dog Park is a keenly observed, dark, and propulsive novel set at the intersection of East and West, centered on a web of exploitation and the commodification of the female body. Sofi Oksanen brings fearless psychological acuity to this captivating story about a woman unable to escape the memory of her lost child, the ruthless powers that still hunt her, and the lies that could well end up saving her.

One more book in under the wire for 2022. I was so stressed out reading this book - she did an incredible job of slowly building the suspense and tension in the story. I really enjoyed it, although I‘ll admit I almost threw it across the room at the end.

Speaking of surprise #thingsincommon — I came across a passage in The Dog Park that uses the word ‘recitative,‘ within the same week that I listened to Toni Morrison‘s Recitatif.

I loved this slow, dark, suspenseful tale, built through flashbacks that gradually reveal the nature of Olenka‘s peril, why she is so frightened when a woman from her hometown in eastern Ukraine tracks her down in Finland, where Olenka is living under an assumed name. They both escaped their violent, poverty-stricken town of illegal coal mines & opium production by getting involved in the international fertility business: egg donors & surrogacy.

Cathythoughts Oh this sounds good ! 2y
Lindy @Cathythoughts If you like bleak, slow-moving suspense… it‘s excellent! By the time I got to the final 100 pages, I didn‘t want to put it down. 2y
Cathythoughts I think I‘ll have to get it so 👍🏻❤️ 2y

“We're trying to limit the TV and news.“
“Does it help?“
“What do you think? Apparently yesterday they invented their very own 'Putin is a dickhead' song and chanted it all day.“

Once, one of our donors told a client that Ukraine was like a real-life Grimm fairy tale. The interpreter had wisely left that untranslated.

This car ran on gasoline. It hadn‘t been outfitted with a natural gas tank, and it wouldn‘t be, because this car transported people who had the money not to, no matter how expensive fuel was. The people who used this car were driving toward a good future, and I had to deal with whatever came along on that road.

The interpreter was a Russian chick in Western clothing who immediately captivated me. My mom was still spraying her hair with furniture lacquer, but this girl was clearly using something else, something that smelled good, like Finnish deodorant.

julesG Ah! The memories. My grandmother wore a beehive until she could no longer pry open hair needles. I remember the tacky film of hair spray on the vanity and the eye-watering smell. 2y
Cathythoughts The Bee hive hair doo ! Memories for me too … my older sister.. I had forgotten this look ! Crazy 😆 2y
Lindy @julesG @Cathythoughts Ha! I have similar memories. It was two of my aunts who were fond of the beehive style. 2y

If the boy ever visited Ukraine, it would be on holiday & he would …. fall in love with the old women who sold flowers on the roadside, adding carrots with bushy green tops to their selection during harvest season & becoming berry sellers as the summer came to an end. The boy would find something authentic & genuine in the stooped grandmothers. There was a word for that, poverty, but he wouldn‘t recognize it.

The stagnant heat of our summers released a smell from wallpaper that foreigners didn‘t treat with the same compassion that I did. To them it smelled musty, not like childhood.

Nutmegnc That is a seriously evocative phrase. I know exactly what that is!! 🤣 2y

Around here, the honest people are in prison and the liars are in parliament.

TrishB Well the second bit definitely resonates! 2y
Lindy @TrishB unfortunately, I think that second part resonates across the globe. 2y
TrishB Sadly, yes ☹️ 2y
