Scarpetta is back! In this twenty-fifth in the electrifying, landmark #1 bestselling thriller series chief medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta hunts an ingenious killer who has mastered cutting-edge science for the most nefarious ends. Forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta has returned to Virginia as the chief medical examiner. She and her husband Benton are headquartered five miles from the Pentagon, in a post-pandemic world that's been torn apart by civil and political unrest. Just weeks into the job, Scarpetta is called to investigate a woman's body which has been shockingly displayed on railroad tracks. As Scarpetta follows the trail, it leads unnervingly close to her own neighbourhood ... At the same time, two scientists are found dead in a top-secret laboratory in outer space. Scarpetta is summoned to the White House Situation Room and tasked with finding out what happened. But even as she's working the first crime scene in space from the ground, an apparent serial killer strikes again. And this time, Scarpetta could be in greater danger than ever before... In this latest novel in her groundbreaking Kay Scarpetta series, Patricia Cornwell captivates readers with the shocking twists, high-wire tension, and forensic detail that she is famous for, proving once again why she's the world's #1 bestselling crime writer.

My 25th visit into Scarpetta‘s world. I think these later books are getting better again- in the middle, the characters were all just majorly dysfunctional.
* I just read Book 24 was to be the last book, but after a hiatus, Cornwall was ready to write Scarpetta again.

TrishB I gave up in the middle! 1y
tpixie @TrishB oh no! 1y
TrishB I thought they went really poor at about number 15! But good to know they pick up again. 1y

tpixie @TrishB yes, they aren‘t as good as the 1st 5-10, but at least everyone isn‘t completely crazy- Dysfunctional ( just a little still) 🙃 1y
Dragon I really enjoyed her early books but stopped reading when the quality of the stories declined - around the werewolf, I think. Glad to hear things are improving- stacking 💚🐉📚 1y
tpixie @Dragon yes, I struggled through the middle of the series! 1y
Dragon Glad to skip them 👍💚🐉 1y

Boring. The earlier books were fantastic. The main character is now a shell of perfection.

Bookzombie I finished book 9 and stopped because I read a spoiler that irritated me. Lol 2y
Bec_lectic I loved all the early Scarpetta novels but stopped after Blow Fly.. didn‘t care for the direction the series started taking. Haven‘t been sure if I should pick up reading them again. 2y

I am so happy to be back with Kay Scarpetta and the other characters in this series. Always at her best when facing adversity, Kay is once again cleaning up after an unscrupulous predecessor, and his still loyal minion. A serial killer, trouble in space, post-pandemic drama, and an ending that had me panicking that we were going to run out of book before the resolution. More, please. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The plot itself was okay, it was no Postmortem, but it was well-thought out with the separate strands finally linking together. I was surprised to find myself at 96% read & wondering how the author was going to pack everything into the conclusion, & in the end, I did think that the ending was rather rushed through, I therefore rate this 3.5🌟

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, HarperCollins UK, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
