Friday, Volume 1
Friday, Volume 1 | Ed Brubaker
9 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
Finally in print - a genre-defying post-YA masterpiece from two of comics most acclaimed talents! A young adult detective hero finally grows up, in the first volume of this new hit series from award-winning creators Ed Brubaker (Reckless, PULP, Kill or be Killed) and Marcos Martin (The Private Eye, Daredevil), with brilliant colors by Muntsa Vicente. Friday Fitzhugh spent her childhood solving crimes and digging up occult secrets with her best friend Lancelot Jones, the smartest boy in the world. But that was the past, now she's in college, starting a new life on her own. Except when Friday comes home for the holidays, she's immediately pulled back into Lance's orbit and finds that something very strange and dangerous is happening in their little New England town... This is literally the Christmas vacation from Hell and neither of them may survive to see the New Year.

This is the beginning to what feels like a fantastic mystery/horror graphic novel. Book one ends entirely too soon. I need books two and three now. The cover does not do a good job of explaining what‘s in these pages but at the same time it‘s a perfect cover. The art is a retro 70s throwback that feels like this could run with the Scooby gang via Sherlock Holmes. I want to know where this is going, I want more, and I want them now.

This graphic novel reminded me of early seasons of ‘Riverdale‘ — noir-esque but centered around two “outcast” kids, solving “mysteries” together. This volume sets up a larger mystery to come. The art is phenomenal and I love that the central character is a nuanced, darkly-written girl (Friday, ha). Graphic novels aren‘t usually my speed, but I like the elevated dark tone of this.

A "post-YA" story about teen detectives that start growing up and feeling with complex emotions and situations. Brubaker writes crime and mystery like no other, and I love the style of Martin's art.

I ate this story up...and then yelled in frustration at the end wanting to know the rest of the story. Great for readers who like a 70s mystery and the occult. I love the pace and flow of the narration and umpredictable actions of the characters #postYA #graphicnovel

Maybe his research would give her a clue...

Great retro notes here, memories of the teenage detective reading of my childhood.

Loved the humour in this first installment: but warning, it ends on a cliff hanger!
